ESPN Premium (previously known as Fox Sports Premium) is an Argentine premium subscription television channel dedicated specifically to the transmission of Argentine soccer, together with TNT Sports after the Fox-Turner alliance for the televising of Argentine soccer, which replaces the public program Fútbol Para Todos. Since the cancellation of that program in January 2017, both Fox and Turner became the owners of the broadcasting rights to Argentine soccer.
History
It was launched on August 21, 2017 from 7:00 a.m. under the name Fox Sports Premium, broadcasting replays of the 2016–17 Primera División Championship matches until August 25, 2017, the date on which the 2017–18 Superliga began. The acquisition of the broadcast rights was quite controversial, since the proposal by Fox and Turner had not been presented in conditions to the AFA due to an error in the text of the proposal, so that said offer had to be rejected and allow the other broadcast candidates to have a greater advantage in being chosen. However, the proposal was the winner.
On October 16, 2020, the Argentine Football Association broke the contract for the television broadcast of Argentine soccer due to the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by Disney, leaving Turner as the only company in the broadcast and leaving open the possibility that Public Television broadcast matches at no additional cost. Finally, on October 30, the court ruled in favor of Disney, thus being able to broadcast the matches normally.
Because Disney sold the rights to everything related to Fox Sports to Mediapro, including the so-called "core content" (thus complying with one of the rulings imposed by the National Commission for the Defense of Competition) in April 2022, the company kept the rights to Argentine soccer that previously belonged to Fox, and therefore also kept the Fox Sports Premium channel. Due to this, and because Disney no longer owns the rights to the "Fox Sports" brand, on May 1, 2022 Fox Sports Premium was renamed ESPN Premium to reflect this change.
