⭠ Last week's report

Even if some sad and tough subjects slipped through, it's all about escapism, particularly movie entries propelled by the Academy Awards.

Rank Article Class Views Image Notes/about
1 Anora 4,026,527 The biggest winner of the 97th Academy Awards was a modest production made for only $6 million with a crew of 40, following a stripper's love story with the son of a Russian oligarch, although halfway through it becomes a search for the guy as he runs away once daddy's henchmen arrive. Critical acclaim and heavy promotion by distributor Neon ensured 5 Oscars, 4 to director Sean Baker (Best Picture, Director, Original Screenplay and Editing) and Best Actress to leading lady Mikey Madison, who has already been a Manson family member in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and a Ghostface in the fifth Scream. Some people did not approve of Anora's glory, such as puritans objecting about telling the story of a sex worker — and ignorantly saying the film is soft porn simply for having sex scenes — and fans of both Demi Moore and Fernanda Torres dismissing Madison's win.
2 Mikey Madison 2,923,905
3 Adrien Brody 2,270,748 22 years after winning Best Actor for The Pianist, Adrien Brody again got an Oscar playing an Eastern European survivor of the Holocaust in The Brutalist. While his acting was good, no one liked how he called off the "get off the stage" music and proceeded to make a 5 minute speech of mostly rambling.
4 97th Academy Awards 2,061,407
AMPAS awarded what they perceived to be the best movies of 2024, with Conan O'Brien hosting the ceremony. Along with all the entries here there were Oscars for the script of Conclave, the effects and sound of Dune: Part Two, the sets and costumes of Wicked, the make-up effects of The Substance, Latvian cartoon Flow upsetting The Wild Robot, and Best International Film providing the first Brazilian win with I'm Still Here (though sadly the country focused less on celebrating its victory than spewing gratuitous hate upon Anora, including making spiteful and unfair comparisons of #2 to Gwyneth Paltrow).
5 Gene Hackman 1,734,494 The In memoriam segment of the above was preceded by Morgan Freeman mourning his Unforgiven co-star Gene Hackman, and ended with a clip of the two time Oscar winning actor. Investigations on his death painted some depressing final days: Hackman's wife Betsy Arakawa suddenly died of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, he didn't notice due to advanced Alzheimer's only for his heart to stop a week later, and another week passed before the police entered the house and discovered the bodies.
6 Kieran Culkin 1,419,241 Who would've thought that 35 years after Home Alone the bedwetting cousin would have an Emmy and an Oscar to his name? Breaking even further from the shadow of brother Macaulay Culkin, Kieran Culkin won Best Supporting Actor at #4 for A Real Pain, where he plays the cousin of Jesse Eisenberg (who also wrote and directed the movie) who is taken by him on a trip to discover the family's roots in Poland.
7 The Brutalist 1,413,210 This ambitious tale of a Hungarian-Jewish architect/Holocaust survivor who goes to the United States is exceptionally made and acted, but its three and a half hour runtime is basically a resistance test, even if theaters added a 15 minute intermission for audiences to rest. Nevertheless, #4 gave this movie three Oscars, Best Actor for #3, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score.
8 Al Green (politician) 1,337,742 A Democratic Party representative from Texas, he repeatedly interrupted #23's address to a joint session of Congress on March 4. Green was escorted out of the chamber, and two days later he was censured by a vote in the House of Representatives.
9 Georgina Chapman 1,094,611 When #3 won Best Actor for the first time, he kissed Halle Berry on the stage (she delivered some payback in this year's red carpet). This time around the kiss was before leaving the seat on this fashion designer and actress, whose ex-husband Harvey Weinstein was an important and controversial figure in Hollywood before lots of women denounced him for lewd behavior. Part of Brody's unending speech was thanking Chapman's children (“Dash and India, I know it's been a roller coaster, but thank you for accepting me into your life. Popsie’s coming home a winner.”).
10 Zoe Saldaña 1,051,880 Lots of movie fans like this actress for among other things three interstellar franchises, Star Trek, Avatar and Guardians of the Galaxy. So her winning Best Supporting Actress at #4 was widely celebrated. Though many would've preferred Saldaña's recognition came from something other than the controversial Emilia Pérez (#20), where she plays a lawyer enrolled by a cartel kingpin to help fake his death while arranging his sex change.
11 Deaths in 2025 1,006,104 Our version of the In memoriam. Instead of this year's apocalyptic chanting, better put the song of a previous montage:
Suddenly
I'm not half the man I used to be
There's a shadow hanging over me
Oh, yesterday came suddenly...
12 Severance (TV series) 987,158 This show starring Adam Scott continues to release new episodes on Apple TV+ until March 21.
13 Sean Baker 978,199 A career built on showing the hard lives of sex workers in movies such as The Florida Project saw its consecration at #4, as Baker became the first director (and only second person overall after Walt Disney) to win 4 Oscars in the same night, for producing, directing, writing and editing #1.
14 Elon Musk 966,040 As Musk calls for the US withdrawal from the United Nations and NATO, Tesla Takedown protests broke out in several Tesla dealerships across the US, and an arson attack on a dealership in France destroyed about a dozen cars. It was also reported that Tesla sales have fallen significantly in several countries in Europe as well as Australia. On March 6, Starship flight test 8, the eighth flight test of the SpaceX Starship, was destroyed about 8 minutes after launch, with the vehicle breaking up in the atmosphere over the Atlantic Ocean.
15 Death of Caylee Anthony 964,101 In June 2008, Casey Anthony (pictured), her 2-year-old daughter Caylee, and a nanny reportedly went on a work trip from Orlando, Florida, to Tampa, according to Casey. There, Casey later told authorities she left her daughter with the nanny while she worked. Caylee was reported missing. Thirty days after departing Orlando, Casey’s car was found abandoned, having never left town, and towed. Her father recovered the car, which, according to him, reeked of death. In December 2008, Caylee's body was found in a trash bag near the Anthony residence, a victim of foul play. Casey was arrested on four counts, including first-degree murder. She was only found guilty of providing false information to law enforcement and was released on July 2011. On March 1, 2025, Casey posted a video on social media, saying she is now a legal advocate and hopes to repair her public image. She added that Caylee was conceived in act of date rape when Casey was 18.
16 JD Vance 956,027 After last week's showdown in the White House involving #17 and #23, the vice president's skiing trip to a resort in Vermont was ultimately cancelled when protestors showed up.
17 Volodymyr Zelenskyy 884,877 In the backdrop of #23 suspending US weapons deliveries and intelligence to Ukraine, Zelenskyy traveled to London to attend a summit with more than a dozen countries to formulate a peace plan to take to the US. He also appears to have taken a more reconciliatory tone towards #23, saying he will travel to Saudi Arabia to meet US representatives for peace talks, and indicated he is ready to sign the minerals agreement.
18 Bhad Bhabie 871,951 A once troublemaking teen who went to Dr. Phil and taunted the audience with "Catch me outside, how about that?", cashing into that to become a rapper, Danielle Bregoli had an eventful week, with a beef against Alabama Barker (Travis's daughter), her estranged husband being shot in a nightclub, and reports that armed men tried to break into her house.
19 ICC Champions Trophy 857,680 From February 19 to March 9, eight countries duked it out in a round robin and single-elimination cricket tournament in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates. India emerged victorious, winning their third title.
20 Emilia Pérez 852,695 The biggest nominee of #4 was this French movie about Mexico starring mostly Americans and a Spanish trans woman. It's an unusual affair, the story about a cartel kingpin who both fakes his death and goes through a sex change, only to later try reconnecting with her children... in basically an opera format. Movie fans already complained about the movie's overall quality, particularly the musical numbers, and its flawed representation of Mexicans and LGBT people. And then the discovery of controversial tweets by leading lady Karla Sofia Gascón ruined the reputation of Emilia Pérez even more, with the 13 nominations only converting into two awards: one deemed acceptable, Best Supporting Actress for #10; and the other quite unpopular, Best Original song for "El Mal", when either Elton John or 16 time loser Diane Warren could win instead, and resulted in some awkward impromptu singing at the podium.
21 Ruby Franke 852,613 Hulu documentary Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke told the story of how this woman rose to fame on YouTube with the channel 8 Passengers, chronicling her life raising 6 children, and then it was discovered she mistreated them enough to warrant an arrest for aggravated child abuse, which last year resulted in Franke being sentenced to at least 4 years in prison.
22 Chhaava 809,633 The latest Bollywood box-office hit chronicles the adventures of Sambhaji as he battles Mughal forces. Chhaava already ranks 9th among Bollywood's highest grossing movies, and 14th in India's overall list.
23 Donald Trump 798,544 In this week’s edition of "What Did Donald Do?" (WDDD), after last week's showdown in the White House where Trump and Vance berated #17, the US president ordered the suspension of weapons deliveries and intelligence sharing to Ukraine. He later appeared to have taken a softer stance in the speech to a joint session of Congress on March 4, after Zelenskyy indicated he is willing to sign a minerals deal with the US. That, however, did not extend to the tariffs on China, Canada and Mexico. Tariffs on all Chinese imports were raised from 10% to 20%, prompting retaliatory tariffs from China. After a one-month delay, the tariffs on Canada and Mexico went into effect on March 4, and in response Canadian retaliatory tariffs began simultaneously. On March 6, Trump delayed tariffs on Canada and Mexico that complied with the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement free trade agreement for four weeks.
24 Timothée Chalamet 764,903 The star of two Best Picture nominees, Dune: Part Two and A Complete Unknown, was perceived as a Best Actor favorite for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in the latter, but #3 was on the way. Chalamet still received much attention for his yellow suit, his date Kylie Jenner, and in an extension of a joke told at the Golden Globes, Adam Sandler hugging him so he could say "CHALAMET!" in a silly voice.
25 Daredevil: Born Again 744,806 Closing it off on the latest Disney+ show of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a sequel to the once Netflix original Daredevil where blind lawyer Matt Murdock decides to return to vigilantism and his archenemy Wilson Fisk is elected Mayor of New York.

Bonus ten, if only for completeness' sake:

  • 26 Ash Wednesday - March 5 marked this year's iteration of the day that ends Carnival and starts Lent.
  • 27 Michelle Trachtenberg - Along with #5, the other big acting death of the previous week. Her fans complained about her absence in #4's In Memoriam, but she was more of a TV actress.
  • 28 Elimination Chamber: Toronto - A WWE event held on March 1.
  • 29 Mickey 17 - The biggest film release of the week, a sci-fi novel adaptation by Oscar winner Bong Joon-ho, where Robert Pattinson is a man being repeatedly cloned while humans colonize a distant planet.
  • 30 Bob Dylan - #24 portrays this musical icon in A Complete Unknown.
  • 31 Dolly Parton - Sad news struck this popular singer with the death of her husband, ending a marriage of nearly 60 years.
  • 32 Macaulay Culkin - #6's older brother, who shined as a child actor but as an adult was surpassed by both Kieran and his other brother Rory Culkin.
  • 33 Flow (2024 film) - Latvia's first Oscar was Best Animated Feature for this movie without any dialogue made using free software, following a cat and other animals trying to survive in a flooding and seemingly post-apocalyptic world.
  • 34 The White Lotus season 3 - HBO's show about a resort continues to release new episodes.
  • 35 The Substance - The oft-disgusting transformations of this movie earned Best Make-Up at #4. Its fans also perceived Demi Moore losing Best Actress to a much younger actress (#2) as a reflection of the movie's story.
