Notice

The article Professor of Classics (Edinburgh) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails WP:N, article created potentially for the purposes of WP:RESUME. Not a named Professorship/Chair and concerned the precedence this article may set with every professorship at every university warranting an article.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. EmyRussell (talk) 21:58, 24 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Emy,
I have replied on the talk page. I have improved the page, and addressed some issues (like referencing), but the principal reason for deletion simply did not follow from former precedent on Wikipedia, going back many years, without even highlighting the significance of this Chair and its holders (e.g., Blackie). The Chair is an established Chair (the idea that a 'named' professorship somehow warranting an article but an established Chair dating from 1708 not seems entirely incoherent), and was not created for the purposes of WP:RESUME.
All the best,
Dominic Psychopompologist (talk) 01:42, 25 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
NB. I have also deleted your deletion request for Glasgow's Professor of Humanity. If it is policy to delete established Chairs simply because they do not have a donors name, then half the articles of Professorships will, alas, also have to be deleted.
