For your valiant efforts at WP:CFDWM. It is both noticed and very much appreciated :) HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 15:58, 12 November 2024 (UTC) |
- @HouseBlaster: (Sorry about the delayed reply.) That's very kind of you, thank you (also for your patient assistance)! Hopefully, this recognition will not turn out to have been regrettably premature, but I do appreciate it and intend to help out there more often from now on :) Felida97 (talk) 00:12, 22 November 2024 (UTC)

Reversion at Chandpur Science and Technology University
Hello Felida97 -- Just a quick note to say that when you reverted the IP's edits on the above you inadvertently restored an unsourced BLP violation that the IP editor had correctly removed. While linking to a draft obviously isn't permitted, listing the unlinked name -- given that the draft has sources that appear valid -- appears acceptable, so I've restored it. Regards, Espresso Addict (talk) 23:18, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Espresso Addict: Yes, sorry, my mistake (not sure why I didn't notice that since I usually do; probably a sign that I should go to bed now), thank you for correcting my mistake and fixing the IP's edits! Felida97 (talk) 23:33, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
Question regarding translating articles from foreign languages
There is a article on the Estonian Wikipedia which doesn't have an English translation. In essence,no English language version exists of it, I want to change that by creating an English language version translated from Estonian. What should I do exactly in order to get it done. I already asked on the article's talk page but only received an bot response so far. Thanks Supelrand (talk) 15:34, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- I also understand you are busy and we haven't talked recently. If you could advise me, that would be great Supelrand (talk) 15:35, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Supelrand: Hi, you are talking about the article et:Valgatabalve, right? In general, you can find information on translating non-English articles into English here: Help:Translation. Given that there currently is no English article (I have checked that as well), you would follow the process detailed at Help:Your first article to create one (this is the same as for any other new article, but in this case, you additionally have to pay attention to the things mentioned on the Help:Translation page). I would suggest that you read those two help pages in full first and then go to the section Help:Your first article#Where to start writing again to create a draft (so a page in the Draft namespace like Draft:Example, just with "Valgatabalve" instead of "Example") using the so-called Article Wizard. (Let me know when you have started the draft, so I can put it on my watchlist.)
- Boiled down, the road to creating an English-language version of this article has basically two steps/stages:
- As just mentioned, if you follow the process at Help:Your first article, you will create a draft at one point using the so-called Article Wizard. The purpose of this draft is to develop the article before it becomes a mainspace article, and you can spend as much time as you want on this draft (also, the fact that I advise you should not create any pressure for you in this regard; I'm fine with any outcome on any timeline that suits you; from my side, you can do it within the next few weeks, but you can also take way longer, only start a year from now, or abandon the project entirely).
- Once you think you are done with your draft, you will submit it for review, which will be done by an experienced editor (though not me), who will review it and either a) move it to the mainspace or b) give you informative feedback on how the draft needs to be improved (after addressing their concerns, you could then re-submit the draft).
- While the topic of this article is far away from any area of interest or expertise of mine (I also speak neither Estonian nor any closely related other language), so I'm not necessarily well-suited to help with the content, I can certainly assist you with everything else (style, formatting, language, etc.). To that end, I would ask you to notify me before taking step 2 (submitting the draft for review), so I can take a look at it and give feedback to make sure that the draft is in a state where I'd consider it ready for the formal review as well. Of course, you can also ask me before that or at any other point (although it's quite unlikely that I'll answer as quickly as I did today). Felida97 (talk) 23:47, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- That is correct, I am doing Valgatabalve, I am going to read over the guides for doing it then consult my language knowledge and resources then get working, I will let you know as soon as a draft exists. Supelrand (talk) 11:28, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- I have translated most of the article and will put it to a draft and add the foreign language sources to it. Supelrand (talk) 11:59, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- I have completed the initial translation and will review it and get the sources and images ready for the draft, once I have made a draft, I will inform you, I also found in the initial translation several Russian and potentially a couple of Latvian words or mixed Estonian-Latvian since Valgatabalve was for several millenia mixed between Slavs, Balts and Finns. I will reach out to someone on the Russian and Latvian Wikipedias so they can check the words over and write it properly but for now, I had just typed the words as the closest English letter corresponding to the Russian letters, eg. (N (Russian letter looking very close to English letter N, I have put it as n). I will inform you once the draft is up. Hope to talk soon Supelrand (talk) 12:43, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- How do I create an draft on mobile again, I can't seem to get it to work when I get it via the guides, can you remind me on how to do it Supelrand (talk) 14:37, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Supelrand: I don't really use the mobile app/website to edit/create articles, so I'm not sure (and I personally wouldn't do it on mobile), but if you really want to, here's the mobile site for the Article Wizard: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Article_wizard. Maybe that will work for you. 20:49, 27 November 2024 (UTC) Felida97 (talk) 20:49, 27 November 2024 (UTC)

Changing specific short desc to general ones...
Hi Felida97, thanks for taking time to review my pages and the short descriptions. I noticed that you have changed one of them and left it in good faith. But now you have changed most of them. I give very specific Short Desc as, for example, MLA from Madhya Pradesh, India, which is more specific and provides clear info about the BLPs role and location. It is suitable as it focuses on the specific role as MLA of the specific state. Indian Politician, on the other hand, is very general. Even a panchayat leader who has not won anything, is an INDIAN POLITICIAN. Getting to become an MLA is something special, and means that the politician has arrived. As per the criteria and guidelines, the one I gave better suits as we need to tell what the article is about, and be SPECIFIC about it. This is what I think and am writing to you in good faith. You are an expert and I see that you have done a lot of work on Short Descs, But I want you to go back and and check... I take part in short desc backlogs and have done 100s of them but I will wait for you to check. So I did not revert any of them. thanks and happy editing! best!! - @Davidindia: Thank you for your message, I very much appreciate that you came here and did not just revert the edits! I understand why you chose the format and see that your intentions were good, but I'm not sure which
criteria and guidelines
you are referring to. Being specific is not one of the principles for short descriptions (see WP:SHORTDESC); in fact, short descriptions are meant to be very general and only need to be specific enough to fulfill the three purposes of short descriptions. For that reason, as I'm sure you know, the short description format for most persons is generally "[country adjective] [what the person is known for]", which is why practically any article about a member of an Indian state legislative assembly for which you did not write the short description already has one along the lines of "Indian politician" (see, for example, the people in the subcategories of Category:Members of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly by term, which I didn't touch so far; case in point, I didn't actually review the articles you created specifically, it's just they are the only ones with this kind of short description). Of course, there are exceptions to this rule, which in the case of politicians means that politicians that serve in very high positions (e.g., heads of state, heads of government, ministers etc.) often have a short description with the specific position. In the case of India, there may be an argument to be made that members of the Parliament of India fall in this category (although, looking at Category:India MPs 2024–2029, it seems that the general consensus is that they do not, with which I would agree), but state-level legislators like MLAs certainly do not (ministers of state governments may do, but ordinary members definitely do not; I wouldn't have made such large-scale changes if I wasn't 100% sure that this is the general consensus). Aside from that, a short description like "MLA from [state], India" specifically actually doesn't fulfill the intended purposes very well because of the use of an abbreviation. While the meaning of "MLA" may be extremely clear to you (and perhaps to people in India in general), short descriptions are meant to be clear to English-speaking readers worldwide, and for example, English-speaking readers in countries where this kind of political position is not called "Member of the Legislative Assembly" (and there are quite a few of those countries) are likely not as familiar with this abbreviation. I hope that clears things up, let me know if it doesn't. Thanks again! Felida97 (talk) 23:07, 28 February 2025 (UTC)- Thanks for the detailed explanation. I think I misunderstood the three purposes of short desc. Also noted the other points, which you explained well. Henceforth will follow as suggested, and will also go thru the criteria to acquaint myself. Best! Davidindia (talk) 05:08, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Davidindia: Great, I appreciate that you went through your short descriptions yourself after the message, thank you! Felida97 (talk) 05:33, 13 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks! Checked about 500 BLPs. Since I have done more than 900 MLAs, I am in process of going thru others. Thanks for flagging the issue. I am bit careful nowadays with the greater responsibility of Autopatrol. thanks and happy editing! Davidindia (talk) 06:46, 13 March 2025 (UTC)
