In March 1970, the “Vaishali Shiksha Pratisthan” society was formed with the goal of promoting education in Bihar. The founders—Sri L.P. Shahi, Dr. (Prof.) S.M. Nawab, and Sri Raghunath Pandey—were instrumental in establishing Sri Krishna Medical College (SKMCH) on May 11, 1970, with the inauguration by the then Chief Minister of Bihar, Sri Daroga Prasad Rai.

The first batch of students was admitted in 1969-70, and classes began at the S.K.J. Law College building in Muzaffarpur, with Dr. S.M. Nawab as the founder principal. A four-bed hospital was also started in front of the college. In 1973, the college moved to a 170-acre site in Umanagar, Muzaffarpur, thanks to the efforts of Registrar Sri M.P. Sinha, Site Engineer Sri R.B. Rai, and Finance Officer Sri P.P. Sinha.

The M.B.B.S. degree was recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI) after inspections in 1975 and 1977. On October 1, 1979, the college was taken over by the Bihar government.

In 2010, SKMCH became affiliated with Aryabhatta Knowledge University, after previously being part of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University & also accredited by the Medical Council of India[2]
