Hadji Hasan Mahala in the early 1900s

Hadji Hassan Mahala (Bulgarian: Хаджи Хасан махала, romanizedHadzhi Hasan Mahala) is a Roma ghetto in Plovdiv, Bulgaria dating to 1400s.[1] With a population of 8,000,[citation needed] residents generally regard themselves as being of the Turkish ethnicity.[1] They do not identify themselves as part of the communities living in Stolipinovo and Sheker Mahala.[citation needed] Its name comes from a mosque, itself named after a Turkish military leader who may have founded the neighborhood.[1]
