File:Barbers' Baptism 147274.jpg

Original file (1,600 × 1,200 pixels, file size: 508 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg)
Description
English: The Barbers' Play: The Baptism (text: original, modernised) from the York Mystery Plays performed from a cart in the streets of York by HIDden Theatre (page lists cast and crew). In the background is St William's College - built circa 1465.

This is as about as close as you can get to how the plays were originally performed.

This picture from the same production shows John pouring a bit of water over Jesus' head. True, this is the way it is done in numerous paintings of the scene but I, RHaworth say firmly that it is wrong - why was John making people trek down to the river when he could pour a little water in Jerusalem? Obviously because he was baptising by total immersion. When I played John, I did it that way - see picture. (To set the scene, I dunked a few other people before doing Jesus.) The possibility that it was immersion is discussed here without coming to any definite conclusion.
