The Hangmen are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, CA , in the mid-1980s. The band released its debut album on Capitol Records in 1989; with a straightforward, Stones and Stooges influenced sound, inspired by the raw sounds of The Gun Club and X [1] . Vic Maile ( The Who / Motorhead ) produced The Hangmen , but Capitol had the album remixed before release [2].
Following a brief signing to Geffen Records , the band saw a second album, entitled Suicide Doors, permanently shelved in 1992 [3]. Throughout the years to follow, Lead Singer/Guitarist Bryan Small tenaciously kept the band alive, until recruiting a new lineup in 1999. It consisted of lead guitarist Jimmy James , bassist Angelique Congleton , and drummer Todd Haney [1].
Small exorcised many of his old demons on 2000’s “Metallica I.O.U.”, an Acetate release that garnered praise with critics and fans locally and around the world. Their first release with the small, Independent Record Label . An ensuing tour brought the band back into the underground spotlight, as younger acts related how The Hangmen had influenced them [1].
The band followed “Metallic I.O.U.” with a live recording, rather than another studio album, so they could revisit The Hangmen’s fine older material, some of which was never recorded. With the 2002 release of “We’ve Got Blood on the Toes of Our Boots”, songs from 1989 through 2002 blended together as a seamless whole, energizing the band [2] .
After a narrative littered with false dawns and enthusiastic restarts, 2004 saw the release of “Loteria” on Acetate; continuing to approach their craft on their terms, with an unwavering sincerity that their peers often lack.[3] An extensive tour with Social Distortion in 2007 ultimately led to Small collaborating with Mike Ness for the “In The City” EP [3].
The Hangmen continued to refine their songwriting in preparation for “East of Western”, released in 2012 featuring ex-Supersuckers guitarist Rontrose Heathman. The band then saw the return of slow hand guitar articulating lead guitarist Jimmy James with 2019’s “Cactusville” and then with “Stories to Tell” in 2023 [2].
