Gopesh Chandra Sarkar was born on 1st January 1940 to Late Jogesh Chandra Sarkar. He pursued higher education and obtained an M.Sc. degree in 1967, followed by a Ph.D. in 1972 from Kalyani University. His academic achievements indicate a strong foundation in scientific research and higher education. He later became a professor at Raiganj University, specializing in botany.

Political Career
