The axolotl (/ˈæksəlɒtəl/) is a critically endangered neotenic salamander that is native to Lake Xochimilco and Lake Chalco in central Mexico. The axolotl's ability to regenerate complex tissues, including limbs and spinal cord, has made it a key model organism in regenerative biology. Studies have shown that axolotl regeneration involves specific signaling pathways and gene expression mechanisms, including the role of the Pax7 gene, which is critical for both growth and regeneration (Nowoshilow et al., 2018)
