Al-Mahalli Mosque (Arabic:المسجد المحلي, romanized:Masjid Al-Mahalli) is a mosque in Rosetta, Egypt. It is named after Ali Al-Mahalli, a sheikh who lived in Rosetta during the 15th century.[1]
History
The mosque was constructed in 1582, on the tomb of Sheikh Al-Mahali, who was buried in 1495.[2] Several restorations to the mosque have taken place since it's construction, earliest of which were restorations in 1722 by the waqf.[3] The most notable restoration was the one of Ali Bek Tabak, the mayor of Rosetta during the second half of the 19th century, who extended the mosque's size by buying two Wikala's north of the mosque and making them part of the mosque.[4] In 2019, another restoration took place, organized by the Egyptian government,[5] aiming at repairing several cracks in the mosque walls, as well as fixing the sewage system,[6] as part of a plan envisioned years ago to make Rosetta more modern to attract tourists and to make it an open-air Islamic museum.[7]
Architecture
The mosque's twenty-three thousand meters long irregular layout comprises a central courtyard surrounded by arcades,[8] supported by exactly 99 columns holding up the ceiling.[9] The mosque contains six entrances, each one crowned with a triple arch and different decorations,[10] and also contains a library.[11] The western segment of the mosque contains the ablution room and has a portico that is supported by 14 columns.[12] The center of the mosque contains the tomb of Al-Mahali, around which a maqsura is placed.[13] The mosque also contains a nineteen-meter-tall minaret.[14]
