The African groups who were responsible for the practice of slavery should not be referred to as tribes, as the word "tribe" in and of itself is not a general term. Most of these groups were organized polities. Contrary to Gawaon's assertion, it is not anachronistic to refer to these groups as nations. Two definitions from Dictionary.com define a nation as: "a large body of people, associated with a particular territory, that is sufficiently conscious of its unity to seek or to possess a government peculiarly its own" and "an aggregation of persons of the same ethnic family, often speaking the same language or cognate languages." Both of these definitions clearly apply to groups like the Zulu. It should also be noted that the term "nation" being defined in the context of a nation-state is absent from any dictionary or legal handbook.
