MV Akka was a cargo ship built at A/B Gotaverken, Gothenburg (Yard No 568), Sweden, launched on the 6 May 1942. The ship measured 5,409 gross register tons (GRT).[1]

History

On 4 April 1956, Akka left Oxelosund with a cargo of iron ore bound for Glasgow, Scotland. The ship entered the Firth of Clyde on 9 April 1956, that evening it grounded on the Gantocks rocks, due to machcanical failure of her steering gear.[2] With the ship damaged and taking on water fast, Captain Sundin gave the order to abandon ship. Minutes after running aground Akka turned to port side and collapsed, hitting a number of lifeboats which were attempting to move away from the ship. Three crewmen were killed on site, with a further three dying in hospital.[3][4]
