Half-length portrait of Queen Sophie of Denmark, née Princess of Mecklenburg (1557-1631) behind an implied balustrade in a rich lace dress with a millstone collar. She wears a beaded hood with ostrich feathers and holds a glove in her right hand.
Inscribed on the front: Die Königin inn Denemarck / 1601
The picture belongs to a series of small-format portraits of European rulers who lived around 1600.
Provenance: The series of portraits from which this originates was probably mostly based on copper engravings. The paintings were spread across several rooms in the Gothic House in Wörlitz.
