1949 mängis Douglas peaosa, elukutselist poksijat filmis "Champion" ("Tšempion"). See nimetati 6 Oscari kandidaadiks, sealhulgas Douglas meesnäitleja kategoorias, ja pälvis neist ühe (montaaži eest).

1952 mängis ta peaosa filmis "The Bad and the Beautiful" ("Halb ja ilus"). See räägib filmiprodutsendist, kes teeb edukaid filme, aga muudab oma vaenlasteks kõik, kellega koos töötab. 1975 mängis Douglas filmis "Posse" ("Jõuk") peaosa, politseiülemat, kes ajab taga pangaröövlit, kuid langeb tema kätte pantvangi. Ühtlasi oli Douglas selle filmi produtsent ja režissöör. See film nimetati Berliini filmifestivali peaauhinna Kuldkaru kandidaadiks, kuid ei võitnud seda.
