Mini album album type
@Paper9oll @ReVeluv02 Just curious, but would you be interested in backing a proposal for a mini album album type on the English Wikipedia?
I maintain KPOP discographies on Wikidata and you've likely seen that we make mini album items instance of (P31) mini album (Q107154516).
I previously proposed the type on the Wikiproject Music talk page and added a description of it as-recommended on the Mini-LP page but it never got off the ground as I let the discussion become dormant.
If I restarted the discussion, would you be interested in backing it? Lectrician1 (talk) 14:11, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
- Hi there @Lectrician1! Backing, you meant "to support" your proposal right? I'm not against your idea and proposal, though, the only problem is that Wikipedians here mostly use the US/UK for all the musical discographies and terms despite differences per country. That's the reason why it is so hard to use mini album for Korean discographies despite Korean sources using that term. Others would also comment that EP and mini albums are technically the same, that's what it makes it more confusing. But I'm not against your proposal. :) ReVeluv02 (talk) 14:18, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
- @Lectrician1 Mini album is K-pop terminology and all of the Korean "mini-albums" releases are referred as extended play (standardalize terminology and also used for disambiguation on English Wikipedia). The mini-albums terminology is also misused by the labels themselves and also further enhanced by Korean medias mindlessly reporting what the labels have told them on without fact checking the terminology general/historical meaning. Mini-albums generally/historically in terms of K-pop context refers to EP but recently it also became associated with single albums for no reason because the labels can't make their mind on what's the standardalize meaning actually is. It's unlikely there would be any meaningful outcome for your proposal (due to various factors,
you will know what I mean once you started the discussionwhich you have encountered in your previous discussion) hence I'm going to be neutral (fyi, my neutral is WP:!VOTE) instead. — Paper9oll (🔔 • 📝) 14:50, 21 March 2022 (UTC)- @Paper9oll @ReVeluv02 Mini album isn't standardized in that it has a standard number of tracks, but you could say an EP isn't either. They're both just terms to describe a music release. There are thousands of mini albums at this point and I don't think they're going away anytime soon. Instead of confusingly calling a "mini album" an "EP" when it's sometimes an "album" on a music streaming site because of its length, it's best to just call it by what it's meant to be called: a mini album. Furthermore, the subtitles and cover art of albums sometimes include "the Xth mini album" and to include this on articles but then call the release an EP is really weird and confusing for the reader.
- FYI adopting a mini album type would also change the way discographies are done. With this change we could have dedicated mini album sections in artists' discographies and the chronology of "the Xth mini album" would actually make sense. Lectrician1 (talk) 15:29, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
- @Lectrician1 Fyi, there is no point debating with just the two of us on your user talk page, such controversial changes (yes it's such due to tons of articles involved) requires the wider community-level consensus, just debating with the two of us changes nothing. Of which your previous attempts on such has failed at community-level since it became stale (or in requested move terminology, no censensus), you can retry again if you wish to but as I've mentioned in my earlier reply the chances on such changes, in my opinion is pretty low. — Paper9oll (🔔 • 📝) 16:05, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
- @Lectrician1 I'm not against the idea of having mini album to replace EP for Korean discography but I do agree with user @Paper9oll in terms of having multiple articles involve. It would require a lot of consensus from the community involved for these to be accepted and even if I did support a lot would either comment or oppose with the proposal. Korean music streaming sites do use "mini album" for EPs but generally EP is the standard. :) ReVeluv02 (talk) 01:59, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
