Philippe Baden Powell (born 15 April 1978 in Paris) is a French-Brazilian musician (piano, composition).
Biography
He started playing the piano at the age of 7.[1] Guided by his father, the Brazilian guitarist Baden Powell, Philippe learned the intricacies of composition, harmony, and improvisation.[2] As a teenager, he lived with his family in Brazil, where Gonzalo Rubalcaba became his musical role model.[3] His formal education took him to prestigious institutions such as the Conservatório Brasileiro de Música in Rio de Janeiro and the Ecole Normale de Musique Alfred Cortot in Paris.[4] After studying in Paris, he moved back to Rio de Janeiro and worked with well-known Brazilian musicians such as Seu Jorge, Marcelo D2, Maria Bethânia, Flora Purim, Airto Moreira and Roberto Menescal.[5]
In 2005, Baden Powell was one of the winners of the Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition.[2][6][7] With Brazilian trumpeter Rubinho Antunes, he founded the quartet Ludere.[8]
Fusing the rich musical traditions of Brazil and Europe, Powel finds inspiration in an eclectic mix of genres, from written music to Afro-Brazilian rhythms, jazz, and poetry. So far, he has released 13 albums. Notable among these are Notes Over The Poetry, a collaborative effort featuring esteemed musicians like singer David Linx and drummer André Ceccarelli,[9][10] and Retratos, which was released with the Brazilian quartet Ludere.[11] Philippe Powell's most recent and important duet project, Entre eux deux, with Melody Gardot is a mesmerizing blend of their unique musical styles.[12][13][14][15]
Beyond his solo endeavors, Baden Powell has lent his talent to various projects as a sideman, collaborating with notable artists such as Ibrahim Maalouf[16] and Laurent Voulzy.[17] His contributions extend even further, with involvement in original soundtracks, including the evocative Zanine, Ser do Arquitetar (2016), a documentary celebrating the life and work of the great Brazilian architect Zanine Caldas.[18]
