The Lion Monument (Löwendenkmal) in en:Lucerne, en:Switzerland. This monument, carved by Danish sculptor en:Bertel Thorvaldsen in 1819, commemorates the sacrifice of more than six hundred en:Swiss Guards ("Gardes suisse") who died defending the en:Tuileries Palace in Paris at the time of the overthrow of the French Monarchy on en:10 August en:1792 during the en:French Revolution. The Swiss Guards were the most senior of the thirteen regiments of Swiss mercenaries in the Royal Army and had served with distinction since the seventeenth century.
