ALT BLK ERA are a two-piece British rock band from Nottingham, formed in 2020. Its lineup consists of sisters Nyrobi and Chaya Becket-Messam. They released their EP Freak Show in 2023 and their debut album Rave Immortal in 2025 (via Earache Records[1]).

History

The sisters started the band during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. They began uploading cover versions of songs[2] to YouTube under the name Nyrxbi & Chxy. Around this time, the pair also completed online courses by the youth organization Inspire Youth Arts, which included a course in songwriting. This was suggested to them by their mother to help Nyrobi get through the days[3] after she was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome in late 2020, which sometimes left her so exhausted she would sleep for up to 22 hours at a time.

Their debut single, ‘Slowly Die: Solar’[4], was released independently on February 4, 2022. This was followed by their debut EP Freak Show[5], which came out on September 1, 2023. Later that year, they featured on Delilah Bon’s single ‘WITCH’[6].

In 2024, ALT BLK ERA were chosen by Tom Morello to open for him at a sold-out show[7] at London’s Electric Ballroom.

The same year, they were nominated for Best UK Breakthrough Act[8] at the Heavy Music Awards and Best Alternative Music Act[9] at the MOBOs.

They have performed at the likes of Download Festival, Reading and Leeds, Glastonbury Festival, 2000trees and Boomtown.

ALT BLK ERA’s debut album Rave Immortal was released on January 24, 2025. It was preceded by the singles ‘My Drummer’s Girlfriend’[10], ‘Straight To Heart’[11], ‘Come On Outside’ [12]and ‘Hunt You Down’[13]. Later, they released a new version of ‘My Drummer’s Girlfriend’[14] with a guest feature from Wheatus. The album went to #1 in the Official UK Rock and Metal Albums Chart[15] and #82 in the Official UK Albums Chart.

In 2025, they won the MOBO Award[16] for Best Alternative Music Act.

Musical style and influences

ALT BLK ERA primarily mix rock and metal music with genres such as drum ‘n’ bass, dance, trap and pop music. They hadn’t been exposed to alternative music until live drummer Sam Brooks[17] showed them bands such as Slipknot and Iron Maiden.
