Madison Keys defeated two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka in the final, 6–3, 2–6, 7–5 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2025 Australian Open. It was her first major title. She saved a match point en route to the title, in the semifinals against Iga Świątek. Keys was the first player to win a major after defeating both the world No. 1 and world No. 2 at the Australian Open since Serena Williams in 2005 and at any major since Svetlana Kuznetsova at the 2009 French Open. Her two further wins over top-10 seeds (No. 6 Elena Rybakina and No. 10 Danielle Collins) made her the fourth woman in the Open Era (after Evonne Goolagong Cawley at the 1980 Wimbledon, Mary Pierce at the 1995 Australian Open and Li Na at the 2011 French Open) to defeat four top-10 seeded opponents en route to a major title. Keys became the oldest first-time major champion in women's singles at the tournament (at 29 years and 11 months old) in the Open Era and the player with the longest gap between their first two major finals in the Open Era.^[1][2][3][4]

Sabalenka was attempting to become the first woman to win three consecutive Australian Open singles titles since Martina Hingis in 1999.^[5][6] She retained the WTA No. 1 singles ranking after Świątek lost in the semifinals. Coco Gauff was also in contention for the top ranking at the beginning of the tournament.

Eva Lys became the first lucky loser to reach the fourth round of the women's singles event at the tournament in the Open Era, and only the sixth to reach the round of 16 of any major in the Open Era.^[7]
