Welcome to the 2026 WikiCup!
Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2026 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here, and a bot will set up your submissions page within one day, ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page.
For the 2026 WikiCup, the highest-ranking contestants will receive tournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. This is the same scoring system that we had last year. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants are no longer eliminated at the end of each round.
The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), Frostly (talk · contribs · email), Guerillero (talk · contribs · email) and Lee Vilenski (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. This looks fine. It would be a good idea to remove the unreliable sources from CinemaBlend, We Got This Covered and comicbookmovie.com!
To reply, leave a comment here and begin it with {{Re|11WB}}. (Message delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.)

Promotion of Erik Campbell (Final Destination)
- Congratulations on the promotion! Aoba47 (talk) 14:27, 18 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Aoba47: Thank you! I still can't believe I managed to do it; I have to say, I'm quite happy with the results. Ideally, the character receives more attention in the future for how well-written he is. Sidenote: I'm still shocked that so few character articles on Wikipedia have featured status. I think Erik might actually be the only character to originate from films whose article has FA-status. PanagiotisZois (talk) 00:10, 20 February 2026 (UTC)
- I am also surprised that there are so few featured articles on fictional characters. I do remember receiving some pushback in the FAC space for these in the past, mostly from an editor who found this topic to be boring and uninteresting. I always found that to be such a strange critique. Wikipedia is a very big site that covers so many different types of topics (as it is an encyclopedia after all), so everything is not going to appeal or interest everyone.
- I believe that you are right that Erik is the only FA about a movie character. That is interesting, as all of the other characters originated from a different medium (television, comics, video games, etc.). I do want to work on more fictional character articles in general, so I could use this as inspiration to work on a film character article. It is all just about finding the time to do it. Aoba47 (talk) 14:32, 20 February 2026 (UTC)
- Oh wow. I mean, just because you may find a particular topic boring, doesn't meant it can't exist on Wikipedia; or become a featured article. That wasn't exactly real criticism, lol. Did this during your earlier days working on the Russell family articles? I think those were some of the first TV character articles to get promoted. It was also the stuff that made me fall in love with your work, BTW. XD
- It would be nice if more film characters got promoted to FA status, though admittedly, I can't think of anyone that EYE would like to work on right now. And sometimes it's all about the "right place" and right time, you know? Like, I'm super glad to have worked on Erik's article and gotten it promoted. But if I hadn't started working on it right after I saw the movie, I don't think I would have started an article now. Let alone try to get it to featured status.
- Have you thought about which characters you'd like to work on? I think we've established we're both Charmed fans (lol), so that's an option. But I also remember you saying that you watched a few soap operas growing up. Would one of the other families from Passions interest you? Or would you prefer to work on another medium like comics or video games? PanagiotisZois (talk) 00:03, 21 February 2026 (UTC)
- Agreed. I have seen these types of comments in the FAC space, but thankfully, I have not run into them too often. I can't remember which character FAC that was connected to this type critique, but I do not think that it was with any of the Russell family articles. It is not necessarily something that I want to dredge up, as it is water under the bridge now.
- Thank you for the kind words about that! I am really proud of my work with those articles in particular. It was something that I was really passionate about at the time, and I am glad that I saw that project through to the end. Those article honestly feel like a lifetime ago lol. I do not believe that there were a lot of character FAs in general back when I first started. I was mostly inspired by Sadie Harris, Todd Manning, and Pauline Fowler (the last of which is no longer a FA). I am grateful for those editors, as they let me know a character FA was even possible in the first place.
- My goal with the Russell family FAs were to hopefully inspire more character FACs/FAs, and while I am by no means responsible for this, I am glad that there has been more work in this topic. I honestly get inspired by a lot of the work that other editors do here (yourself included). For instance, Thebiguglyalien's work on Black Widow (Natasha Romanova) inspired my work on comic book character articles, Satsu (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Melaka Fray. I think that Wikipedia is at its best with this type of collaboration and encouragement.
- I completely agree about right place, right time. A majority of my FAs are about articles that randomly grabbed my interest. This is particularly true with the music FAs that I have done. I would love to see more film characters get into the FA space. I have been thinking about going back to Sévérine for a potential FAC. Maybe one day when I have the time to do so. It is really about timing with FACs because it does take a lot of time and work to get an article ready for the process and through a FAC nomination, so you'd need to be engaged and passionate about it.
- I do have a few random ideas kicking around in my head, but I am not sure what I will settle on yet. I am not in a particular hurry to do a new project yet anyway. It would be fun to go back to Passions articles. I think that I would go with individual characters, like Tabitha Lenox, over the family articles, but you never know. I would be a bit nervous that more and more soap opera coverage may be inaccessible due to link rot and death. I am not sure how active the digital archival and preservation processes are for these types of sources.
- It would be cool to do another comic book character or work with a character from a different medium completely. I would probably want to do a JRPG character, as that is my favorite genre, but my Japanese is nowhere near strong enough to read those sources (and while I know machine translation is an option, it is not my personal preference). It would be cool to do a character from a book or a play or something. As you can probably already tell, I do have very random ideas lol. I think that I will let my inspiration guide me when I am feeling ready for a new project. Aoba47 (talk) 02:53, 21 February 2026 (UTC)

hi.
Hi again. Sorry for bothering. I wasn’t sure if just clicking the "thank" button would be enough after you rewrote several sentences, so I came here to thank you personally. By the way, I came across Aoba47’s talk page and saw that you mentioned not having a favorite character in the RE franchise, but weren’t you interested in Chris before? nyway, ladgyou are kinda active at WP again. Regards 🍕BP!🍕 (🔔) 14:08, 21 February 2026 (UTC)
- I did get the notification. Thank you for that BP. :) As for having a favourite character, when I was younger I'd say it was Claire, but nowadays I really don't have one. I'm definitely interested in Chris and like him, but he's still not my favourite. And thank you! I don't plan on being TOO active, but I probably will be a bit more involved compared to last year; unless something changes. PanagiotisZois (talk) 20:09, 21 February 2026 (UTC)
- I see. I spoiled myself intentionally after watching some leaks at Requiem so I know what happened to the plot and to Leon. Since you are interested at him a little bit, do you want to collaborate at FAC soon? :S 🍕BP!🍕 (🔔) 20:20, 21 February 2026 (UTC)
- Hey BP. By collaborate at FAC, do you mean to simply review the article or act as co-nominator? I don't think I'm up for the latter, but can help witht he former if I have time. I think I'd like to focus more of my energy on personal things as time passes, you know? Still, I do hope your work with Leon's article goes well! PanagiotisZois (talk) 23:57, 25 February 2026 (UTC)

- I apologize for disturbing, but this topic is really not for me and it's hard to rephrase it as non-native speaker. If you could, anyou rephrase this sentence so that I can add at reception? Source [1] "Leon has been one of my formative video game crushes since 2005, when I was drawn to his fine-as-hell character design in Resident Evil 4 long before I knew I was gay. And my god, Requiem manages to effortlessly capture his sensual aura and swagger in every motion. His reload animations? Sexy. His violent kills that should make me recoil in disgust? I’m swooning. His stupid dad joke quips at every horrifying thing he witnesses and experiences, which should be just as repulsive as the way he kicks a zombie man’s head open against a brick wall? My pants are already gone" 🍕BP!🍕 (🔔) 02:19, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Boneless Pizza!: I'd write it as: "Kotaku writer Kenneth Shepard commented on Leon's sex appeal in Requiem, praising it for "captur[ing] his sensual aura and swagger" through his animations and humor." We don't need to know all the things this guy found sexy about Leon, lol.
- And don't worry about asking for help. I can understand it can be difficult to write anything in a language that you're not proficient at. PanagiotisZois (talk) 08:59, 27 February 2026 (UTC)

WikiCup 2026 March newsletter
The first round of the 2026 WikiCup ended on 26 February. As some of you may have noticed, good article nomination reviews now receive 10 points, an increase from 5 points in the previous year, as per a consensus at WT:CUP. This point increase has been retroactively applied to all good article reviews for which competitors have claimed points in this round. Peer reviews, which continue to be worth 5 points, are now listed in the same section as featured article candidate reviews, rather than with good article reviews. Everyone who competed in round 1 will advance to round 2 unless they have withdrawn or been banned. No other changes to the round-point system have been made for this year.
Round 1 was competitive. Three contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and the top 16 contestants all scored more than 300 round points. The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:
Bgsu98 (submissions) with 1,467 round points, largely gained from 1 featured article, 5 featured lists, 15 good articles, and 42 FAC and GAN reviews;
Olliefant (submissions) with 1,246 round points, largely from 4 featured lists, 9 good articles, 2 featured topic articles, 4 did you know articles, and 75 FAC and GAN reviews;
Generalissima (submissions) with 1,095 round points, largely from 3 featured articles, 6 good articles, and 5 did you know articles;
MCE89 (submissions) with 848 round points, largely from 1 featured article, 8 good articles, 1 did you know article, and 32 FAC and GAN reviews; and
Rollinginhisgrave (submissions) with 838 round points, largely from 1 featured article, 8 good articles, 1 did you know article, and 14 FAC, GAN, and peer reviews.
The full scores for round 1 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 7 featured articles, 16 featured lists, 2 featured-topic articles, 168 good articles, 13 good-topic articles and more than 50 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 14 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 700 reviews. The tournament points table will be updated within the next few days.
Remember that any content promoted after 26 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
