Edit request February 2025
I would like to suggest some edits and additions to the article. Given the article's circumstances, I feel it's best to propose them through an edit request, especially since my previous edits have been reverted. I am not paid to edit the article. The edits in question are intended to give more context to Kendall's work and recognition, but also improve formatting and links within Wikipedia. Thanks, --YCTEBK8108 (talk) 13:48, 4 February 2025 (UTC)
- Just to clarify: are the circumstances that you have been accused of paid editing (in the edit summary history), or something else? Rusalkii (talk) 07:13, 9 February 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, I have been accused of paid editing, but I am not being paid to edit the article. I'm using the edit request to have my edits reviewed by other users becuase I feel it's safer to use that approach, as I don't want to risk having my changes reverted again. Thanks! --YCTEBK8108 (talk) 14:00, 10 February 2025 (UTC)

I would like to change the infobox's website parameter because I think it looks better if a template is used:

Early life and education
In this section I think it would be beneficial to add that Kendall was a National Merit Scholar, as this gives more insight into his achievements as a student. The source used for that claim has already been used in the article.
Early life (before)
|

He received both his B.A. (2005) and M.A. (2008) from Vanderbilt University,[1] and a Master of Fine Arts from New York's School of Visual Arts (2011).[1] |

Work
In this section I would like to include a little more information about the debut feature. As it has received awards, and was received well by critics, I believe it is appropriate to give a brief summary of the film's topic. I would also like to add two more accolades.
Work (before)
|
|---|
|
His feature directorial debut, La Camioneta,[3] premiered at the 2012 SXSW Film Festival[4] and marked him as “a name to watch” in Variety.[5] During its theatrical release, the film was selected by Stephen Holden as a New York Times Critics' Pick[6] and named as one of IndieWire's “Top Docs of 2013”.[7] |
Work (proposal)

Kendall's 2012 debut feature, La Camioneta, is an experimental documentary that tracks the 3,000-mile journey of a decommissioned American school bus through complex social, political, and economic landscapes as it is transformed into a vehicle for public transportation in Guatemala.[8][9] During its theatrical release, the film was selected by Stephen Holden as a New York Times Critics’ Pick[10] and named as one of IndieWire’s "Top Docs of 2013",[11] earning an award from the International Documentary Association[12] and marking Kendall as "a name to watch" in Variety.[13] |

Recognition
The recognition section currently lists only the fellowships that are already named in the first section. My proposal would be to add to this list and avoid having the same information twice.
Recognition (before)

Kendall was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in 2014 and the Pew Fellowship in 2016. |

Authority Control and Categories
The article lacks both the Category:American video artists and the {{Authority control}} template, so I propose adding them.

Edit request June 2025
Hello Encoded, Thank you for implementing the suggested edits. I spotted minor mistakes which is why I'm making another request. Best, --YCTEBK8108 (talk) 13:29, 19 June 2025 (UTC)
- @YCTEBK8108: I have mostly done the first part although removed some primary-sourced content. Awards need independent, reliable sources to be included - that means an organisation independent of that giving or receiving the award. Most of these fail to meet that threshold and specifically the Pew source is not independent of the subject. I am therefore declining the request in it's current form. SmartSE (talk) 11:12, 25 June 2025 (UTC)
Early life and eduction
I would like to revise this paragraph to remove redundant content:

Early life and education
I would like to update the "Early life and education" section to restore the following wording. This wording was present in earlier versions of the article, and all information is backed by existing citations:

Work
In this section I would like to include a little more information about his earlier works:
Work (proposal)
|
|---|

Kendall's 2007 short film, For the People, By the People, considers the work of the CEFREC/CAIB Bolivian filmmaking collective and the role of audiovisual media production in structuring cultural understandings of history.[19][20] Kendall's 2010 film, The Time Machine, examines the world of a migrant watchmaker whose studio is situated in one of the peripheral passageways of Grand Central Terminal. The film follows the process by which the watchmaker disassembles and reconfigures one watch, constructing a sense of solitude within a very public space. As it moves backwards as well as forwards in time, the film deploys a temporal plasticity while reflecting on the concept of slowness amidst the rapid pace of the train terminal.[21][22] |
Partly done I don't think an in-depth synopsis of films is appropriate, but I've added an overview of both. Thanks, Encoded Talk 💬 16:22, 28 September 2025 (UTC)
Mark Kendall (artist)
I’d like to suggest changing the article title from Mark Kendall (filmmaker) to Mark Kendall (artist). I think “artist” better reflects the range of his work. He’s often described as a multidisciplinary artist. For example, his Guggenheim Fellowship profile notes he “works between film/video, sculpture, performance, and installation”. His Guggenheim also mentions that his work has been shown at art institutions like the National Gallery of Art and the MFA Houston — not just in film settings.[23] The title Mark Kendall (artist) would better capture the full scope of his work and would allow room to include other aspects of his career in the future if they become more notable.
