History

Grivel was founded in 1818 in Courmayeur, Italy. Grivel is the surname of the original founders who succeeded each other for generations.[citation needed] The company is the oldest manufacturer of tools for alpinism in existence.[citation needed]

In 1982, the company was sold in to a group headed by Gioachino Gobbi.[1] Today,[when?] the company has offices in Courmayeur and Verrayes in the Aosta Valley, in Vivaro in Friuli and Chamonix in France.

The company was awarded a Compasso d'Oro design prize in 2016 for its "Twin Gate" carabiner.[2][3]

In November 2024, Gioachino Gobbi, who was still acting as President of Grivel at the time, died.[4]
