Chandrabadani is a SIDDHPEETH temple (2,277 m above sea level). On the border of Devaprayag tehsil and Pratapnagar tehsil is this well-known temple of Chandrabadni Devi, located at the top of the "CHANDRAKOOT" mountain about 10 km. north of Kandi Khal (a place on the Devaprayag-Kirti Nagar metalled road).[1]
In Indian mythology
The legend says that the torso of Sati fell here and her weapons got scattered all around the place. Thus, even today huge number of iron trishuls (tridents) and some old statues can be seen lying around the revered temple of Chandrabadani. The story of the temple is mentioned in SKANDPURAAN. When Lord Shiva was carrying the burnt body of MAA SATI (who jumped in the MAHAYAGYA of his father DAKSH PRAJAPATI as a protest of the disrespect of his husband Lord Shiva), the parts of her body scattered in different places and hence those places became "SIDDHPEETH". In CHANDRABADANI, her BADAN (BODY) was dropped; therefore, it was named CHANDRABADANI. The temple is served by BHATT and SEMALTY Brahmin|Brahmin families. Bhatts are the leading priests called "PUJARI", and Semaltys are the temple's subpriests called "PUROHIT". Near the temple, the village "PUJARGAON" is the residence of the PUJARI and PUROHIT families.
Sight-seeing
The place has views of the Surkanda, Kedarnath and Badrinath peaks. The temple is small and contains a Shri-yantra carved out on a flat stone instead of any idol. Traditionally, a cloth canopy is tied to the ceiling over this Shri-yantra once a year and the Brahmana priest doing it has to do it blind-folded (because seeing the body of MAA SATI is forbidden ).
