The 2009 Maryland Terrapins football team will represent the University of Maryland in its 57th season in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Terrapins play in the Atlantic Division of the conference, and compete each season against all five divisional opponents, two Coastal Division opponents on a rotational basis, and one permanent cross-divisional rival: Virginia. The rotating Coastal Division opponents will be Virginia Tech and Duke. In 2009, Maryland will play its second game of the home-to-home series against California, this year in Berkeley.

Pre-season

Coaching Changes

On 5 December 2008, it was announced that defensive coordinator Chris Cosh would be returning to Kansas State. Cosh will take over as assistant coach and defensive coordinator. He was tapped by the recently re-hired Bill Snyder, who coached at Kansas State from 1996–2005. Cosh previously served under Snyder as his linebackers coach from 2004–2005.[1][2]

Maryland also lost special teams and tight ends coach, Danny Pearman, to Clemson at the end of the 2008 season. Shortly after being selected as Tommy Bowden's permanent replacement, head coach Dabo Swinney hired Clemson alum Pearman. Pearman played at Clemson as a tight end (1984–1987) and coached special teams and offensive and defensive tackles while at Alabama (1990–1997).[3][4] Swinney himself played at Alabama during that period as a wide receiver.[5]

Key Losses

It has been widely speculated that junior wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey will leave for the 2009 NFL Draft. The Rivals.com staff projected Heyward-Bey as 14th pick in the first round.[6] College Football News ranked him as third-best prospective NFL receiver for 2009.[7] Sports Illustrated named him among twelve first-round prospects for the draft.[8] ESPN's Draft Central has him rounding out their Top 32 prospects list,[9] and analysts predicted Heyward-Bey as "likely leaving" Maryland for the draft.[10]

The following are some of the key players who will be no longer eligible to play in the 2009 season:

Recruiting

As of 4 December 2008, Rivals.com rated Maryland's 2009 recruiting class as 26th in the nation. Scout.com ranked Maryland as 19th.[11][12][13] In addition to Good Counsel running back Caleb Porzel, Maryland has also shown strong interest in his schoolmate Jelani Jenkins, who has been rated the number-one prospective linebacker in the nation. Jenkins has narrowed his possible school selection to a field of fifteen which includes the University of Maryland.[14][15]
