Khmer mythology is the body or collection of myths of the Khmer people of Cambodia. Serpents are a particularly important sacred animal in Khmer mythological beliefs. According to one origin myth, the name “Cambodia” resulted from the conquest of a serpent princess by a Kambuja lord named Kaundinya: the descendants of their union are the Khmer people. [1] Another notable feature of Khmer mythology is the Dharmasala, or house of fire. Scholars theorize that the houses with fire functioned as a "rest house with fire" for travellers or even chapels for travellers believed to be the house of fire, housing the sacred fire.[2]
