Description
English: A view of the row boats of the frigate Quebec, the sloop Raven, gun-brigs Exertion and Redbreast, and cutters Alert and Augusta boarding four French gun vessels off the Isle of Norderney on 3 August 1811. Napoleonic Wars (1803-15).
This action was fought near the island of Norderney off the coast of east Friesland when the boats of a squadron detached from Admiral Young's fleet, commanded by Captain Charles Sibthorpe John Hawtayne, captured four French gun-vessels with a joint force of 12 heavy cannon and 102 men. Lieutenant Samuel Blyth of the Quebec was immediately promoted to the rank of Commander.
This appears to be a different state of the print described under Parker 215.a. Parker states that no publisher or date is given, and spells John Clark's name as 'Clarke' although it is rendered without an 'e' on this print. Parker states that the date of 3 August, which is given in the title, is in error, but a description of this action in Marshall, (1827:2010), p.264, also gives the date as 3 August. This same source gives the commander of this action as Lieutenant Samuel Blyth, not Bligh, as rendered in the title of this print.
George III catalogue entry: Naval Engagement The Row Boats of the Quebec Frigate, Raven, Exertion and Redbreast Brigs, Alert and Princess Augusta Cutters, under the command of Lieut. S.t Bligh, at mid-day on the 3.d of August 1811, off the Isle of Nordney gallantly boarding four French Gun vessels: by I.H. Clark, 1813.
