Comment: "See German Wikipedia article." Please remove the sentence, and I encourage you to translate the German Wikipedia's section into the draft instead. Way too many unsourced statements in my opinion, along with bunch of spammy links that has been removed. ABG (Talk/Report any mistakes here) 03:18, 21 February 2025 (UTC)

Company history

Together with Hans List, several engine researchers founded the IBL (Ingenieurbüro List). The diesel engines from 1949 were already being mass-produced at the Jenbacher Werke in Tyrol and at the Andritzer Maschinenfabrik in Graz.
In 1951, the IBL became the AVL, the "Anstalt für Verbrennungskraftmaschinen List" (Institute for Combustion Engines List). In the following year, the central test site was built in Graz-Lend which is still home to the group management and the headquarters of the research and development activities.
1958: Development of the direct-injection four-stroke diesel engines with swirl ducts for truck engines.
1963: Construction of an 18-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine with 2250 hp.
1970s: Market launch of fully automatic AVL test beds, capsule technology for engine sound insulation, DI diesel engines for passenger car applications and LD light diesel engine.
1979: Helmut List, son of the company's founder Hans List, who had worked for the company since 1966, took over as chairman of the board of management.
2003: Opening of the Helmut-List-Halle in Graz as an event centre for up to 2,400 visitors.
2008: Foundation of AVL Software and Functions GmbH in Regensburg[4].
2010: Start of the battery laboratory AVL Shanghai Tech Center.
2015: Start of AVL Tianjin Technical Center.
2016: Partnership with Greenlight Innovation Corp[5], a provider of test and production facilities for hydrogen fuel cells, electrolysers, batteries and energy storage systems.
2017: AVL launches competence center for research and development of novel transmission systems with TU Graz[6].
2021: AVL launches Battery Innovation Center[7][8].
2022: AVL launches Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Test Center in Graz[9], Mobility and Sensor Test Center in Roding[10] and Vehicle Engineering Center in Zalaegerszeg.
2022: AVL is one of the worst-ranked major Austrian companies on the Yale School of Management's list of companies refusing to shut down operations in Russia after the war of aggression against Ukraine[11], even three months after management announced it was "just figuring out" why AVL was on the list. The ranking received was revised in early 2023[12].
2023: AVL ceased all business activities in Russia and initiated divestments[13].
2024: AVL equips high-tech test laboratory for battery test factory[14].
