General elections will be held in the Cayman Islands on 30 April 2025.[1]
Electoral system
The Parliament has 21 members. Nineteen members are directly elected by first-past-the-post voting from single-member constituencies, for a four-year term. Two ex officio (appointed) members are the Deputy Governor and the Attorney-General, who are appointed by the Governor.[2]
Background
The current governing coalition, the United People's Movement, is a minority government with seven MPs led by Premier and party leader Julianna O'Connor-Connolly. On October 31st, 2024, four MPs of the governing alliance, the United People's Movement, resigned from the coalition, resulting in a minority government. The UPM will not contest the next general election, with the governing party dissolving and the premier not seeking reelection. The four former members of the UPM have formed a new political party called The Caymanian Community Party (TCCP), headed by André Ebanks.[3]
The opposition party, the PPM will contest the 2025 general election with Joey Hew as its party leader with notable party member resignations such as the Speaker of the House and former Premier Sir. Alden McLaughlin and former Deputy Premier Moses Kirkconnell.
The Cayman Islands National Party is a new party formed by Dan Scott, a former regional managing partner at Ernst & Young.
