Comparison of numbers of warriors vs later Kingite battles in Waikato
It is interesting that this this huge battle is largely overlooked by historians when it is considered how many Maori warriors took part. The number seems to have been at least twice to 4 times as big as the largest battle in the land wars about 50ish years later. In the large battles around Te Awamutu the Kingites seem to have been able to field 2-3000 warriors for a short time before their final defeat.Claudia May 2011 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 222.153.156.98 (talk) 04:35, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
Location of battle site
Using the sketch map on p9 of King Potatau by Pei Te Hurinui-Jones and Google Earth map of the location it appears that the battle took place between the 2 lakes named Lake Ngaroto and Lake Ngaroto-iti(little Ngaroto)on the ridge called Te Tau-o-Ngapuhi.Lake Road now runs along this ridge. It appears that like many of the shallow lakes in the region Lake Ngaroto-Iti has been extensively drained and it now much smaller than is shown in the sketch map.The topography of the sketch map conforms very closely with that of Google earth's version. The main action of the battle took place in the vicinity of the main trunk railway line and the 3 man made duck shooting ponds with mai-mais, a few hundred metres to the east.Claudia. Combine/consolidate the two sections that discuss the year of the battle?
Currently there are two separate paragraphs - with two separate sets of references - that speculate on when the battle took place:
- The paragraph beginning "Early New Zealand historian ...", and
- The paragraph (actually just a single sentence) beginning "Sources differ on the date of the battle".
These two paragraphs are not inconsistent with each other, but it seems strange to have two separate paragraphs here. Could someone more familiar with this topic perhaps consolidate these two paragraphs (and their references)? Ross Finlayson (talk) 03:07, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
- At this edit I have done this, and a lot more tidying up as well. Richard Keatinge (talk) 12:21, 28 May 2019 (UTC)
