The regiment was originally formed as the Second Battalion, Volunteer Militia Rifles of Canada on 26 April 1860. In 1863, the regiment was renamed the 2nd Battalion Queen's Own Rifles of Toronto. Under this name, the regiment participated in the Battle of Ridgeway during the Fenian Raids of 1866. The Regiment officially became the 2nd Battalion Queen's Own Rifles of Canada in 1882.
