English: Buttington Station. View NE, towards Shrewsbury; ex-Great Western & London & North Western Joint, Shrewsbury - Welshpool secondary main line, junction with Cambrian Whitchurch - Oswestry - Aberystwyth main line. The Cambrian main line was closed on 18/1/65, but the Shrewsbury line remains open as the 'international' mid-Wales link, Buttington station having been closed on 12/9/60. (I took the photograph from the rear of an ex-GW Diesel railcar that had been hired by the Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society to convey members from Paddington to Towyn for their AGM: we returned to Paddington overnight, but the railcar broke down at Lapworth in the early hours, and eventually a 28XX 2-8-0 towed us to Leamington whence we were brought back to London in another railcar). |
