The Norwegian Raid of the Rus was a military campaign in 997 led by Eiríkr Hákonarson to the Kievan Rus'. The campaign ended as a success to the Norwegians who ended up destroying the city of Ladoga. Eiríkr Hákonarson led the raid as revenge for Olaf Tryggvason seizing power in Norway.
The raid
Although there arent any contemporary sources of this event, in the 1980s, Soviet archaeologists unearthed evidence which showed a burning of Ladoga in the late 10th century.[1]
