To tag a file that has no source, use

{{no source|month=March|day=5|year=2025}} or simply {{subst:nsd}}

which will put the file in Category:Wikipedia files with unknown source as of 5 March 2025. (If the category doesn't exist yet, please .)

When tagging a problem file, consider notifying the uploader. You can add

{{subst:File source|File:FileName.jpg}} --~~~~

to the uploader's talk page.

Users sometimes specify the source or licensing information in the edit summary, or the source may be obvious but it is not in standardized template form. If so, simply edit the description to have the appropriate templates.
