English: At the base of the column stands one of the symbols of France, the Gallic Rooster - also known as the French Cockerel. The cockerel is the symbol of Frances history, land and culture and has been used ever since the Middle Ages.
The Place des Quinconces, in Bordeaux, is one of the largest city squares in Europe (approximately 31 acres or 126,000 m²). The principal monument was erected between 1894 and 1902 in memory of the Girondists who fell victim of the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution. |
