ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:45, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the 2025 WikiCup!

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2025 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page.

For the 2025 WikiCup, we've implemented several changes to the scoring system. The highest-ranking contestants will now receive tournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are now open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants will no longer be eliminated at the end of each round.

The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), Frostly (talk · contribs · email), Guerillero (talk · contribs · email) and Lee Vilenski (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Madonna

Hello! I hope you're well. May I just say you did a great job sumamrizing the critical reviews on the Madonna album Bedtime Stories (Madonna album)? Thank you so very much! Do you think you could take a look at the critical reception section of other Madonna album articles I've worked on such as Erotica (Madonna album), Like a Prayer (album), True Blue (Madonna album), and more recently Hard Candy (Madonna album)? Again, thank you so much! Christian (talk) 14:56, 10 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I just noticed how much of a quote farm that was and have yet to read those other sections, but I'm more than happy to do that. User:HumanxAnthro (BanjoxKazooie) 15:00, 10 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there! I was just looking through GA nominations, and just wanted to let you know that the audio sample you uploaded for this track, File:SecondNatureRush.ogg, is barely too long for use per WP:SAMPLE — a sample can only be 10% of the full song, meaning that for a 4:35 song, the audio sample can only be 27.5 seconds long. I'm also a bit concerned about the article's notability? While you are certainly a very prolific Wikipedian and the article looks relatively complete, I also can't help but notice that all the sources in the article are about the album, Hold Your Fire, as a whole, or are biographies of the band, which goes against WP:NSONG (not to mention that the song has not charted, been certified, or covered as far as I can see). Leafy46 (talk) 15:37, 10 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

WP:NSONG only prohibits "album reviews", as in single-piece articles published in, let's say, the NMEs and Pitchforks of the world, for establishing notability. While there is some of those from newspapers cited in the article, another chunk of the lyrical and compositional analysis is cited to academic and officially-published books primarily about Rush's entire discography and career, and nothing prohibits non-trivial coverage from entire books on artists to establish notability. If that were the case, a lot of articles about Beatles songs would probably be nominated for deletion by now. User:HumanxAnthro (BanjoxKazooie) 15:41, 10 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Also, that sample limit seems to be a new rule, and I'm glad you caught it. To my previous knowledge, the maximum length was 30 seconds no matter the song length, of which I saw several articles on three-and-a-half-minute pop songs reach 30 seconds. User:HumanxAnthro (BanjoxKazooie) 15:43, 10 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Gotcha. I'm personally for the deletion of some of those Beatles song articles myself, but I respect the status quo and to each their own.
The sample rule has also been around as long as I've known, but it definitely wasn't being enforced well in the past lol. Leafy46 (talk) 20:18, 10 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
"I'm personally for the deletion of some of those Beatles song articles myself." Whoa, holy shit! User:HumanxAnthro (BanjoxKazooie) 21:01, 10 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Well, some of 'em. I'm still a newer editor (compared to you, at least), and I'm working through how I want to draw the line between inclusionism and deletionism in my personal philosophy to editing. My thinking is, does every song on an album like With the Beatles absolutely need a page? Probably not. But each page is, at the very least, somewhat comprehensive, and it doesn't actively hurt the encyclopedia to keep them around (especially as the Beatles are one of, if not *the* most, documented bands in history), so I don't think it's a fight worth picking. Leafy46 (talk) 22:12, 10 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's all good, I was just shocked to see the response, because, ya know.... The Beatles. Just so you know, there is already another rule for an article to exist: if the coverage from independent sources is not enough to make the article beyond stub length, you cannot write the article. I have seen some Beatles song articles where their length was borderline on being stub. I don't know if those articles are technically complete, though, as I have not read any book source on the Beatles or researched them with the usual Google methods (Google News, Google Scholar etc.) and Newspapers.com. So maybe it's possible more expansion needs to be done. User:HumanxAnthro (BanjoxKazooie) 22:16, 10 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Gotcha, that rule makes a lot of sense. Apologies for troubling you with something like this, but thank you for taking the time out of your day to chat! And good luck with all your GANs: Rush is a band which I've always wanted to get a little more into, but I could never find the motivation to sit down and listen through an album of theirs. Any recommendations? Leafy46 (talk) 23:08, 10 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Start with their self-titled debut, Fly By Night and Moving Pictures as they are simple compared to all of their other albums while still having moments of prog to dip your toes into the genre. They both have a normal amount of tracks, seven-to-eight, with a couple of long songs. User:HumanxAnthro (BanjoxKazooie) 23:10, 10 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
