The Space Tower, a permanent attraction at the Minnesota State Fair, is an observation tower that rises 330 feet into the air, offering spectacular views of the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area.
Construction
The tower was constructed in 1965.
Operation
The ride typically operates for the 12-day duration of the fair, ending on Labor Day. Beginning in 2005, the Space Tower expanded operations to include service during the Auto Show, which is held annually at the fairgrounds, usually in June.
The current fare for riding the Space Tower is $3.00 for each passenger over three years old. Children three years old and younger ride for free.
Significant Events
In 1986, 1987, and 1989, Jay Cochrane ("The Prince of the Air") walked a tightrope from the top of the 4-H Building to the top of the tower. When he asked to return and attempt the ascent while riding a motorcycle, the ride's owners refused.
The Space Tower was voted "Best State Fair Ride" in 2007 by the local Minneapolis newspaper City Pages.
