Mas'ud ibn Muhammad al-Muqbali (Template:Lang-ar; born 2 September 1976), better known simply as Al Muqbali, is an Omani religious scholar and a leading religious personality of the Sultanate of Oman. He is considered a mainstream scholar of the Ibadi school.[1]
Biography
Mas'ud ibn Muhammad al-Muqbali was born on 2 September 1976 in the village of Falaj al-Awda in the Sultanate of Oman.[2] He received his religious education in Muscat at the religious institute under scholars Mubarak al-Harathi and Badr al-Din al-Khalili.[2] Al-Muqbali later joined the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs as an imam.[3]
In August 2023, al-Muqbali was arrested by Omani authorities, prompting protests by his admirers demanding his release.[3][4][5] Grand Mufti Ahmad al-Khalili stated in his support: "We do not know of a preacher of your age in the history of the school who achieved this fame in the eastern and western regions.”[4] Influential Omani writer Hamad al-Sawa’i also denounced al-Muqbali's arrest amongst other activists.[4][6] After social campaigns, governmental authorities released al-Muqbali a few days later.[7]
