Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Rivers

There is an RfC at Talk:Besor_Stream#RFC:_Main_source_of_the_Besor_stream, the question is over how to describe the source of the stream (there are different options for where the source is). Help from members of this WikiProject would be appreciated. Samuelshraga (talk) 08:59, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It would also be helpful if someone is willing to comment on how river systems with multiple channels are usually handled.
Thank you! MilesVorkosigan (talk) 19:01, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Leveraging river data at WaterwayMap.org (OpenStreetMap derivative)

I recently ran across the amazing WaterwayMap.org site, created via open source software which regularly aggregates OpenStreetMap data into visualizations and river descriptions. See some background at WaterwayMap.org is not ʲᵘˢᵗ a map - General talk - OpenStreetMap Community Forum

First of all, I commend it to Wikipedia editors and users as a worthy data source. It only about two years old and is most valuable to openstreetmap editors to help fix errors in river and stream data. But already it provides convenient invaluable access to the extensive OSM data.

Each link provides clear, zoomable maps of rivers and their tributaries, river segment names and connections, basic hydrological context, and a unified place to see upstream and downstream routing

As you might imagine, the quality of the data varies widely, but I don't know of anything else that is as comprehensive and helpful.

It also seems appropriate to add links to their river articles after checking for at least basic sanity. For example: Boulder Creek which I have provisionally added to Boulder Creek (Colorado) as an External link.

It is particularly useful for smaller rivers and creeks where high-quality mapping and context are otherwise hard to find, which may enhance the usefulness of our External links sections on many river stubs and articles.

In general, OSM aligns with the greater Wikimedia movement. Waterwaymap.org links can complement existing sources like GNIS (e.g. [https://edits.nationalmap.gov/apps/gaz-domestic/public/search/names/217920 Mad River]), and USGS links to streamflow data, with an easier-to-navigate modern map. It can improve articles on under-documented rivers.

Has this been discussed before?

What might proper guidelines be for link placement, frequency, or when to omit? ★NealMcB★ (talk) 17:24, 10 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It appears that anyone can register and edit the maps. That makes the site user generated, and such sites are generally considered not reliable. Donald Albury 17:56, 10 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That's why I linked to the Waterwaymap page from External links. But also note that OSM is a well-run analog to Wikipedia, and of course wikipedia pages link freely to other user-generated pages, on Wikipedia, and via geohack.toolforge.org links to oodles of OSM maps. ★NealMcB★ (talk) 23:46, 10 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Straits

Should straits with names such as Bass Strait use the in front of their names in sentences? Our articles and categories are inconsistent, and sources also seem divided. Is there any particular guidance on the issue? Is it just a case-by-case basis for each strait of what the majority of sources do? Mclay1 (talk) 06:44, 23 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

How Category:Lists of longest rivers are listed? Aren't they original research?

Copied from Help desk.

I am recently reviewing list of longest rivers of China in Chinese Wikipedia. It was a featured list once, but delisted for original research. Which part, you ask? It's the selection criterion: Rivers included in the article must at least 1000 km. However, a user suggested that the criterion itself is original research if no citations provided, and must provide a reliable source that defined a "longest rivers of China" as "rivers in China that are at least 1000 km".

Of course, the usage of the Chinese word may contributed the issue (Chinese don't use grammatical number, so we can't tell if "最长河流" is "longest river" or "longest rivers", see plural for details), but after reading some longest rivers' lists, such as List of river systems by length, List of longest rivers of the United States, and List of longest rivers of Ukraine, I found that no citations provided to their definition of "longest rivers".

Then why list rivers longer than 800 km instead of 1000 km in the US? Why list rivers longer than 1000 km long in the world, not 800 km? Are there any sources supported their criteria? Why aren't these considered original research? - I am puzzled by these questions, and have no choice but ask in the help desk.

Thanks for reading. Saimmx (talk) 13:41, 18 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

If someone can help get this draft accepted would be appreciated, it was originally declined because the citations weren't footnoted (that's been fixed). There are three Nanticoke Creeks and two have articles, the one at Nanticoke Creek is also a Susquehanna river tributary (in Pennsylvania) and is much shorter with a much smaller drainage basin. This one in New York doesn't have a page at all. H2nobodyknows (talk) 17:30, 27 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
