Xkcd and the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
(I apologize. I let this message get really long. Tldr Should The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald even have an “In Popular Culture Section” to begin with?)
Vigilantcosmicpenguin, Thank you for your edits on The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Most of them were reasonable and significantly streamlined the article.
However, I have mixed feelings on the removal of Xkcd from the “In Popular Culture” section. For one, the reference not removed was rather obscure - when I search for the parody, there are few secondary sources on it. In fact, the album it is one does not have a page on the wiki. Additionally, I do not totally agree with your appraisal of Xkcd as obscure - there are many secondary sources on it, and Wikipedia itself has multiple articles covering it.
However, I somewhat agree with your removal of Xkcd on different grounds. Due to the vast subject matter of the web comic, its frequent direct mention of Wikipedia, and its shared computer-literate audience with many amateur Wikipedia editors (including myself), it can cause problems with article quality (see Wikipedia:Xkcd in popular culture for a more in-depth explanation of the problem and why I might agree with your removal).
At the same time, the article’s “In Popular Culture” section is very short. This leaves me with two possible conclusions for what would result in the best article.
The first would be to return the Xkcd mention. I feel that due to the short “In Popular Culture” section and the overall relatively brief length of the article, returning the reference would not hurt the article. If this were another article (of which plenty of examples are provided in that article I linked), I would say no, but in this case, the song itself is a part of popular culture and has few other examples, running little risk of an “In Popular Culture Section” getting too long and making the article convoluted.
The second, and perhaps more reasonable solution, is to wonder whether the article even needs an “In Popular Culture Section” in the first place. The other reference is very obscure, and from what I can tell, most other articles on major (a.k.a #1 charting or otherwise notable) singles (e.g Dancing Queen, Indiana Wants Me) even have this section or anything similar except for very good reasons; the closest I can find is the “Legacy” section in Never Gonna Give You Up, which itself is just a brief overview of Rickrolling that links to the dedicated article. As much as I love Xkcd personally and would love to have both references, I’m not sure there’s a reason for the article on “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” to have an “In Popular Culture” section at all.
Anyhow, thank you for your time. I apologize for this long-winded message. I just felt I should err on the side of etiquette and discuss this with you, as I didn’t feel it would be right for me to romp straight over your edits without a word.
Have a wonderful evening.
Respectfully, Dexcube Dexcube (talk) 01:45, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, I think you're right that the song parody isn't notable. If I were you, I would go ahead and WP:BOLDly remove that from the article. When I was editing the article, I didn't check the source for that claim; I just saw The Washington Post (clearly reliable) and didn't bother looking any further. Now that I read the article, I see that it barely even mentions the song, so it's definitely not relevant to the article.
- As for the XKCD comic, I think it was clearly not notable because there was no secondary source cited. It fails WP:IPCV—any "in popular culture" information should be verified by a source that establishes notability. (Which also applies to the song parody, in this case, because it was only mentioned in passing.)
- And don't worry about the long message. I'm also prone to writing way too much sometimes. Though I would suggest discussing this on the article's talk page rather than mine, for future reference.
- — Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧 (talk | contribs) 02:39, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the suggestions and the helpful advice! I'll make sure to take them into consideration in the future. Dexcube (talk) 03:43, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

DCWC closing update
The 2024 Developing Countries WikiContest has come to a close! After a thrilling finish to the event with a slew of submissions on the final day, we have our winners. With 608 points,
Thebiguglyalien (submissions) comes in third with his series of Kiribati and Botswanan submissions;
BeanieFan11 (submissions) flies into second place at the last second with 771 points after a string of good articles about sportspersons; and after leading for much of contest's three months,
Generalissima (submissions) finishes with a whopping 798 points to take home the Gold Belt Buckle. Congratulations to our winners!
In addition to his spot in the top three,
BeanieFan11 (submissions) also wins the special awards for submitting under the most countries (44 countries) and for writing the most articles about women (15 Did you know? nominations)!
Magentic Manifestations (submissions), after making 16 submissions under the Indian flag—15 of them good articles—receives the awards for most submissions for a single country and most featured or good articles promoted. For their submission of one FAC review, five FLC reviews, and 20 GAN reviews, Simongraham (submissions) wins for most article reviews.
The results of the contest have far exceeded any expectations the coordinators had for it at the beginning: among the submissions to the event were 3 FAs, 10 FLs, 88 GAs, dozens of article reviews of every kind, and more Did you know? submissions than we can count! Regardless of your level of participation, every contestant can be proud to have contributed towards a major step in countering the systemic bias on Wikipedia. Every year, millions of readers and editors around the globe use Wikipedia to educate themselves and communicate with others about parts of the world that often receive less attention than they deserve. Thank you for participating with us in the contest and contributing to this effort. The DCWC will return next year and we look forward to seeing you contribute again! However, before that...
We need your feedback! Join the conversation on the talk page to discuss your reflections on the contest (even if you didn't participate!) and help us make it better.
If you have any questions, please leave a message on the contest talk page or ask one of the coordinators: Ixtal (talk · contribs), sawyer777 (talk · contribs), or TechnoSquirrel69 (talk · contribs). Hello, Vigilantcosmicpenguin,
I left a message for you on this AFD, alerting you to the fact that you incorrectly formatted this AFD. It's not a correct bundled nomination so if editors want to Delete, only the primary article will be affected. I urge you to review the instructions at WP:AFD for nominating multiple articles and fixing this AFD. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 06:17, 20 December 2024 (UTC)
- So, Vigilantcosmicpenguin, will you be fixing this AFD soon? Otherwise, I might just untag all of these articles as this was not a correctly formatted AFD. It's important that you take care of this. Liz Read! Talk! 07:26, 21 December 2024 (UTC)

Welcome to the 2025 WikiCup!
Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2025 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page.
For the 2025 WikiCup, we've implemented several changes to the scoring system. The highest-ranking contestants will now receive tournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are now open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants will no longer be eliminated at the end of each round.
The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), Frostly (talk · contribs · email), Guerillero (talk · contribs · email) and Lee Vilenski (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Introduction to contentious topics
You have recently edited a page related to abortion, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.
A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have an expanded level of powers and discretion in order to reduce disruption to the project.
Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:
- adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
- comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
- follow editorial and behavioural best practices;
- comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
- refrain from gaming the system.
Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures, you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

WikiCup 2025 March newsletter
The first round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 26 February. As a reminder, we are no longer disqualifying the lowest-scoring contestants; everyone who competed in round 1 will advance to round 2 unless they have withdrawn or been banned from Wikipedia. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points at the end of each round. Unlike the round points in the main WikiCup table, which are reset at the end of each round, tournament points are carried over between rounds and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far.
Round 1 was very competitive compared with previous years; two contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and the top 16 contestants all scored more than 500 round points. The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:
Gog the Mild (submissions) with 1,168 round points, mainly from 4 featured articles and 4 good articles on old military history, in addition to an assortment of GA and FA reviews.
Generalissima (submissions) with 1,095 round points, mainly from 2 FAs, 2 featured lists, 8 GAs, and 16 Did You Know articles mainly on historical topics.
BeanieFan11 (submissions), with 866 round points from 20 GAs, 23 DYKs, and 2 In the News articles primarily about athletes.
Sammi Brie (submissions), with 846 round points from 16 GAs about radio and TV stations, 45 GA reviews, and 3 DYKs.
Hey man im josh (submissions), with 816 round points from 5 FLs about sports and Olympic topics, 46 FL reviews, 3 ITN articles, and a large number of bonus points.
MaranoFan (submissions), with 815 round points primarily from 3 FAs and 1 GA about music, in addition to 9 article reviews.
The full scores for round 1 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 18 featured articles, 26 featured lists, 1 featured-topic article, 197 good articles, 38 good-topic articles and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 23 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 550 reviews.
Remember that any content promoted after 26 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2, which begins on 1 March. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! Ad:Dianna Cowern changes
Hi! I noticed you’ve cleaned up the article, which seems fine. You’ve also removed quite a bit of information — including some details that help establish notability, like collaborations with other notable science communicators. Was this intentional or was this an oversight?
Cheers, Nux (talk) 15:55, 10 April 2025 (UTC)
- I removed the statement about her collabs because it was unsourced; the article body did not mention the fact. I plan on expanding this article with better sourcing, so I might add this information back if I find sources for it. I think you're right that Cowern's collabs are a significant part of her notability, so it's likely that they are covered in reliable sources. — Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧 (talk | contribs) 19:32, 10 April 2025 (UTC)

Hello. I made some edits to the top paragraph. Then I noticed that you were working on the article in your sandbox. I've spent some time in Niamey. I'd love to help you improve the article but I won't touch your sandbox unless you let me know if you'd like to collaborate. I'm fluent in French, good at copyediting, and also good at finding references. Thanks! - tucoxn\talk 15:24, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
- Hi, I'm glad to see this message!
I'd be happy to collaborate on this article; feel free to make changes to my sandbox. Since I only have some knowledge of French, I might send you some French sources if that's okay with you. Besides that, my draft could use copyediting, and, since you're familiar with Niamey, you could do a sanity check to make sure there's nothing completely false.
PS: I'm working on this article as part of WP:The Core Contest. If you want to make significant contributions, I could list you as a collaborator. — Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧 (talk | contribs) 19:51, 23 April 2025 (UTC)- Thanks - those ideas all take advantage of my skills and interests. I'm also happy to translate any French sources! If you feel like my contributions are significant enough to merit, please list me as a collaborator at WP:The Core Contest. When you reply to me here, would you please {{ping}} me? - tucoxn\talk 18:33, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
- There is a nice graph of the temperature in Niamey at Semi-arid climate#Hot semi-arid, in case you want to add that to the article. - tucoxn\talk 13:36, 27 April 2025 (UTC)
- Nice catch; I wouldn't have noticed that graph myself. I think it's that's a good visual for the climate section.
Also: do you think you could try finding a map of the quartiers of Niamey? I can find a source that lists the quartiers, but I can't find a map, which would be a useful visual. — Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧 (talk | contribs) 19:07, 27 April 2025 (UTC)- @Tucoxn: forgot to ping sorry — Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧 (talk | contribs) 22:14, 27 April 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for the source showing the list of 90 quartiers. I'm not certain any online map is going to show all 90 of them. Probably quartiers that are divided (i.e., Bobiel, Bobiel II, Bobiel III) will often (not always) show as one quartier on maps. Furthermore, I'm not sure any of these maps are open source: Gifex map, Carte 1 in this article, Figure 1 in this article, Carte 1 in this article, Figure 2 in this article, and finally Carte 3.2 in this mess. Hope these are helpful! - tucoxn\talk 16:54, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, I think you're right that there's no map with all of the quarters, but it was worth a shot. Seems that quarters are added or divided often enough that the best maps online are outdated. Guess I'll have to leave the map out of the article; bit disappointing when information isn't available. — Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧 (talk | contribs) 21:48, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
- I would recommend the Gifex map. It's the newest and clearest of the bunch. While the boundaries of neighborhoods change and new neighborhoods are added, I would suggest including a map of the quartiers because it's illustrative and useful. There is a map of the neighborhoods of Pittsburgh at Pittsburgh#Cityscape but there's no map of the neighborhoods of Washington, D.C. at either Washington, D.C.#Geography or Geography of Washington, D.C.. In Africa, I am finding relatively few neighborhood maps in Wikipedia articles -- Dakar, Maputo#Administrative subdivisions, Cairo#Metropolitan area and districts, and Monrovia#Neighborhoods are some exceptions. Unfortunately, searching GA capitol cities in Africa also doesn't provide much guidance: Bangui#Geography and climate has a neighborhood map but Fez, Morocco does not. - tucoxn\talk 11:58, 30 April 2025 (UTC)
- Good point that a map would be useful. I'll add a map of neighbourhoods, and then I can update it in the future if an updated source is available. I'll probably base it off of the map you found from Gifex (which appears to be copied from this 2014 map from ReliefWeb, which is reliable).
As for the terminology of the quartiers, I think you're right, I'll change it to "quartiers". — Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧 (talk | contribs) 19:14, 30 April 2025 (UTC)

WikiCup 2025 May newsletter
The second round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 28 April at 23:59 UTC. To reiterate what we said in the previous newsletter, we are no longer disqualifying contestants based on how many points (now known as round points) they received. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points at the end of each round. These tournament points are carried over between rounds, and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers at the end of each round. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far. Everyone who competed in round 2 will advance to round 3 unless they have withdrawn or been banned.
Round 2 was quite competitive. Four contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and eight scored more than 500 points (including one who has withdrawn). The following competitors scored at least 800 points:
BeanieFan11 (submissions) with 1,233 round points from 24 good articles, 28 Did you know articles, and one In the news nomination, mainly about athletes and politicians
Thebiguglyalien (submissions) with 1,127 round points, almost entirely from two high-multiplier featured articles on Black Widow (Natasha Romanova) and Grace Coolidge, in addition to two GAs and two reviews
History6042 (submissions) with 1,088 round points from four featured lists about Michelin-starred restaurants, nine good articles and a good topic mostly on Olympic-related subjects, seven ITN articles, and dozens of reviews
Gog the Mild (submissions) with 1,085 round points from three FAs, one GA, and four DYKs on military history, as well as 18 reviews
Arconning (submissions) with 887 round points, mostly from four FLs, six GAs, and seven DYKs on Olympic topics, along with more than two dozen reviews
In addition, we would like to recognize

The DCWC is back!

Hey Vigilantcosmicpenguin, the Developing Countries WikiContest will be returning for a second year, and sign-ups are now open! The contest will run from 1 July to 30 September, and the objective remains the same: improve as many articles relating to developing countries as you can to help fight systemic bias on Wikipedia.
In other news, we have a new face on the coordinator team this year: last year's sixth-place finisher, Arconning (talk · contribs)! The coordinators would like to extend a sincere thanks to Ixtal (talk · contribs), who is leaving the team, without whom the contest would not exist. After feedback from contestants last year, the scoring rules are undergoing some modifications; the new rules and a summary of the changes made will be posted to the contest talk page shortly.
If you have any questions, please leave a message on the contest talk page or contact one of the coordinators: Arconning (talk · contribs), sawyer777 (talk · contribs), or TechnoSquirrel69 (talk · contribs). The 2025 Core Contest Winners!
The winners of the 2025 Core Contest are announced 🎉. An great turnout with a impressive variety of articles and laudable improvements. The judges (Aza24, Femke and Casliber) would like to thank everybody who joined and congratulate the winners.
- First place (and a prize of £120) goes to Phlsph7 (talk · contribs) for his systemic overhaul of the Political Philosophy article. What was once an unwieldy entry—dominated by a sprawling history section of nearly three dozen subsections!—is now an accessible and well-structured survey of a complex and often polarizing subject. We particularly commend Phlsph7’s global, inclusive, and comprehensive approach. He has once again demonstrated exceptional skill in handling core topics with clarity and balance.
- Second place (and a prize of £100) goes to Dracophyllum (talk · contribs) for their outstanding work on both Trunk and Flower. The former was reimagined from a ~200 word stub into a richly detailed and impeccably sourced overview—an effort truly worthy of its dedicatee, the late and much-missed Vami IV. Meanwhile, their improvements to the Flower article transformed an already strong entry into an exceptional one, now well on its way to passing FAC.
- Third place (and a prize of £80) goes to Vigilantcosmicpenguin (talk · contribs) for his major development of the Niamey article. The entry now proudly stands among the finest city articles on Wikipedia—from thirty scattered references to nearly 400 high-quality academic sources. We particularly commend his inclusion of numerous French-language sources and thoughtfully comprehensive approach to the topic.

Barnstar
Hello Vigilantcosmicpenguin,
I've noticed how often people receive Barnstars for their contributions, and I truly admire the culture of appreciation in this community.
I've been trying to give back too — supporting other editors, improving pages, participating in discussions — and I try to contribute with care and passion.
It may sound a bit emotional, but I would truly appreciate a Barnstar, if you ever felt that I deserved one. Even a small recognition means a lot to me — it helps me stay motivated and feel like I belong in this big and awesome community.
Thank you for your time, and thank you for everything you do here!

User:TechnoSquirrel69 submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:
- Some of the people I highly respect in this project are newer editors who put in the time and effort to become proficient encyclopedic writers, and editors who combat systemic bias and shed light on perennially underrepresented topics. Vigilantcosmicpenguin (talk · contribs · count · logs), somehow, managed to do both! They had less than a thousand edits when they signed up for the 2024 Developing Countries WikiContest, and among their many excellent submissions was a slew of new articles about abortion in African countries, five of which are now good articles. They've written on many other topics besides, including
quirky subreddits,
musician BLPs, and cuisine under authoritarian regimes. I hope you'll join me in celebrating this editor's milestones and asking them, hopefully, to continue their good work here for years to come. Seconded by QuicoleJR

As a reminder, any content promoted after 29 August but before the start of Round 5 can be claimed in Round 5. In addition, note that Round 5 will end on 31 October at 23:59 UTC. Awards at the end of Round 5 will be distributed based on who has the most tournament points over all five rounds, and special awards will be distributed based on high performance in particular areas of content creation (e.g., most featured articles in a single round).
Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges – Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), Frostly (talk · contribs), Guerillero (talk · contribs) and Lee Vilenski (talk · contribs) – are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck!

İmage issue
Hello, your articles about abortion has received quality article status. Congratulations, but why are there no representative images? For the richness of the article, it should at least be enriched with relevant images, right? Thank you. 88.236.103.126 (talk) 11:27, 31 August 2025 (UTC)
- Hi, thanks for your interest in my articles! The point about images has come up a few times in Good Article reviews, but I simply cannot find images that are relevant to most of these articles. I think Abortion in Morocco, Abortion in Senegal, Abortion in Madagascar, and Abortion in Africa are the only ones where I could find images relevant to the text. If you can find free images related to abortion in other countries, or have other suggestions for images to add, let me know! — Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧 (talk | contribs) 19:31, 31 August 2025 (UTC)

DCWC closing update
Two weeks ago, the 2025 Developing Countries WikiContest came to a close! After three months of stiff competition at the top of the leaderboard, we have our winners.
vigilantcosmicpenguin (submissions), continuing his work on covering abortion in Africa, comes in third with 692 points.
simongraham (submissions) comes in second with 763 points, largely from a slew of good articles about jumping spiders. And returning to the podium for the second year in a row,
BeanieFan11 (submissions) takes the Gold Belt Buckle with a mind-boggling 946 points from his series of articles on sportpersons. Congratulations to our winners!
Amazingly, the award for the most countries covered goes to both
BeanieFan11 (submissions) and simongraham (submissions), who each submitted articles under 30 flags!
BeanieFan11 (submissions) also wins for writing the most quality articles (16 good articles). For submitting 16 articles related to El Salvador,
PizzaKing13 (submissions) wins the award for most submissions under one country. The award for most submissions related to women goes to both Spookyaki (submissions) (7 biographies about women) and
vigilantcosmicpenguin (submissions) (21 related articles). And for the second year, simongraham (submissions) wins for the most reviews, having submitted 21!
Among the participants' contributions were 2 FAs, 5 FLs, 124 GAs, and an uncounted number of DYKs, ITNs, and reviews of every kind! The DCWC will return next year, and we look forward to seeing you contribute again! However, before that...
We need your feedback! Join the conversation on the talk page to discuss your reflections on the contest (even if you didn't participate!) and help us make it better.

Your Biringan GA review seems very positive
I noticed that you were reviewing Biringan for GA status.
In my opinion, it should be at the very least put on hold. The grammar is poor, and the sources are sparse, blog-style, and not very reliable. What made you pass those two points? OmegaAOL (talk) 08:35, 30 October 2025 (UTC)
- Tagging @TheNuggeteer to make him aware of your comments. I agree that the grammar has flaws (and TheNuggeteer has received comments about this in the past), but the GA criteria explicitly state that it's okay to have a few grammar mistakes. As for the sourcing, you are correct; a few unreliable sources were already removed during the review, but I think there is only one unreliable source remaining (the journal listed on ResearchGate). If you think there's any other issues with sourcing you can take it to the review page. — Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧 (talk | contribs) 16:39, 30 October 2025 (UTC)

Your work at that article is brilliant! I wonder if you came across some decent sources that talks about Doge (meme) also (the reception section of that article is in bad shape). ~2025-36700-14 (talk) 21:12, 26 November 2025 (UTC)
- Hello and thank you! One of the sources I use, The World Made Meme (chapter 7) by Ryan M. Milner, has a lot of information about Doge, including some statements about its reception from the media, as well as comparisons with other memes (primarily Lolcats). I see you're using a temporary account, but I'll consider that you just accidentally logged out of an account—if you have Wikipedia Library access, you can access this book via OUP. GAN: Endorois case
HI Vigilantcosmicpenguin, I've taken a look at the Endorois article. I'd be interested in doing the Good Article review, but can't start for a week, due to other stuff IRL right now. I do have some background in law and human rights, although nothing specifically relating to the African Charter. If no-one else picks it up this week, I'll start next weekend. Vital Signs 2026
Hello there!
First of all, thanks for your series of abortion articles. Really important to have great articles in that space. I was wondering if you'd like to help out with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Medicine/Vital Signs 2026 campaign. The goal is to get all top-importance articles of WikiProject Medicine to B-class or above. Many of these highly-read articles are dreadfully out of date, meaning we're doing a disservice to our readers. In the campaign, the plan is to check all articles (including those now assessed at B or higher), and get them up-to-date and understandable to a wide audience. Will you join in, perhaps to address the maintenance templates in the main abortion article and make sure the rest of the text is still accurate and devoid of systemic bias?
—Femke 🐦 (talk) 08:32, 16 December 2025 (UTC)
- Best of luck on this project, but I don't think I'll want to work on this. The topic of abortion would be beyond my subject area—I've written about the social/legal/political aspects of abortion, but I'm not familiar with writing about medical topics, plus I'm not used to working on broad topics like this. But if members of the project choose to work on the abortion article, I'd be happy to provide some input on the information about social factors while others handle the medical information. — Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧 (talk | contribs) 02:49, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
- That's fair, yes. The social sections are the one I always struggle with. I always feel a bit of an imposter translating social science papers in medical articles (and it's why my work on endometriosis has stalled a bit). So even contributing just a single section or with suggestions is very welcome! No worries at all if not. —Femke 🐦 (talk) 15:39, 20 December 2025 (UTC)

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Welcome to the 2026 WikiCup!
Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2026 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here, and a bot will set up your submissions page within one day, ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page.
For the 2026 WikiCup, the highest-ranking contestants will receive tournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. This is the same scoring system that we had last year. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants are no longer eliminated at the end of each round.
Sneath Glass Company
Hello Vigilantcosmicpenguin - We have houseguests coming over in about an hour, so I will be unavailable for about the next day–and–a–half. I'll be back at it late Thursday or Friday afternoon. TwoScars (talk) 19:04, 21 January 2026 (UTC)
@Vigilantcosmicpenguin: - Watching some NFL tonight and dealing with the ice storm, but I should be back on Sneath Glass Company Monday. I also found a newspaper article (Indy Star 10/19/2018) that discusses Hoosier cabinets and mentions Sneath, but am having trouble accessing it. With my real world job, I am responsible for several large data sets. I typically look for any data points that may be questioned, and research the answer to the question before it is asked -- it makes me look smarter when I already have the answer to questions. I tend to do that with Wikipedia too. Don't worry, it is good for me to work with someone with a way different background. I will try to finish things up tomorrow (providing we have electricity) to everyone's satisfaction. TwoScars (talk) 01:29, 26 January 2026 (UTC)

Panipuri Red Links
Thanks for sharing that policy on red links in your edit summary, I did not know of that policy. However, I am thinking that still, according to that policy, some links could still be removed. For example: do readers really need a red link for "Indian street foods" or "street food of Delhi"? It is not jargon or a technical term, so I don't see why it needs a link to a page that does not exist. Oraclesto (talk) 14:52, 23 January 2026 (UTC)
- Even if a term is not a technical term, there is still more context that readers may want to know. What matters is that an article could exist to provide more context, and Indian street food and Street food of Delhi are both notable topics (they easily pass GNG, by a lot). These links can also be useful if someone creates a redirect. (For example, it would maybe make sense to redirect Street food of Delhi to Delhi#Food, which very briefly mentions the subject.) — Vigilant Cosmic Penguin 🐧 (talk | contribs) 18:09, 23 January 2026 (UTC)

Women in Green reviewing drive

Hello Vigilantcosmicpenguin:
This month, February 2026, WikiProject Women in Green is participating in the February 2026 GAN Backlog Drive, in which we're aiming to review as many outstanding Good Article (GA) nominations about women and women's works as possible. If you want to help out, you can check out the project talk page for a list of nominations in need of review (including some WiG originals). If you haven't reviewed a GA nomination before, be sure to check out the reviewing instructions and guidelines and feel free to ask for a mentor to check your work.
We are also working together with a wikithon hosted on 5 February by Wikimedia UK, which will focus on writing and improving articles about women involved in sustainable development. If you want to join the event, feel free to sign up at the eventbrite page; or if you would be interested in providing a 20-minute assessment and/or a full GA review of the submitted articles in the weeks following, put your name down on the project talk page for updates as the event progresses.
We hope to see you there!

On 9 February 2026, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Bombay sandwich, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. WikiCup 2026 March newsletter
The first round of the 2026 WikiCup ended on 26 February. As some of you may have noticed, good article nomination reviews now receive 10 points, an increase from 5 points in the previous year, as per a consensus at WT:CUP. This point increase has been retroactively applied to all good article reviews for which competitors have claimed points in this round. Peer reviews, which continue to be worth 5 points, are now listed in the same section as featured article candidate reviews, rather than with good article reviews. Everyone who competed in round 1 will advance to round 2 unless they have withdrawn or been banned. No other changes to the round-point system have been made for this year.
Round 1 was competitive. Three contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and the top 16 contestants all scored more than 300 round points. The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:
Bgsu98 (submissions) with 1,467 round points, largely gained from 1 featured article, 5 featured lists, 15 good articles, and 42 FAC and GAN reviews;
Olliefant (submissions) with 1,246 round points, largely from 4 featured lists, 9 good articles, 2 featured topic articles, 4 did you know articles, and 75 FAC and GAN reviews;
Generalissima (submissions) with 1,095 round points, largely from 3 featured articles, 6 good articles, and 5 did you know articles;
MCE89 (submissions) with 848 round points, largely from 1 featured article, 8 good articles, 1 did you know article, and 32 FAC and GAN reviews; and
Rollinginhisgrave (submissions) with 838 round points, largely from 1 featured article, 8 good articles, 1 did you know article, and 14 FAC, GAN, and peer reviews.
The full scores for round 1 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 7 featured articles, 16 featured lists, 2 featured-topic articles, 168 good articles, 13 good-topic articles and more than 50 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 14 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 700 reviews. The tournament points table will be updated within the next few days.
Remember that any content promoted after 26 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. The file File:Opening of "Never Gonna Give You Up".mp3 has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
There already exists an audio sample of "Never gonna give you up": File:Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up.ogg. Per WP:SAMPLE, "
There should only be one sample per song recording". Also, it's too high bitrate and should technically be an OGG Vorbis file.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.
Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion based on established criteria.
If the proposed deletion has already been carried out, you may request undeletion of the file at any time. Nutella lover • [ chat│supervise ] 22:47, 28 February 2026 (UTC)
