Bot generally send CS1 error notice on user talk, but see this edit where bot send notice on article mainspace.––KEmel49(📝,📋) 18:30, 1 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]

This was probably some sort of database update issue. Sunnymachocho moved their entire user talk page to article space, triggering all sorts of messes. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:46, 1 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
However bot managed to put notice while it was on mainspace.––KEmel49(📝,📋) 18:51, 1 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
True. As I said, the bot was probably working from a stale database cache or mirror. The page ID for the User talk page went with the page when it was erroneously moved to article space. This is an extreme edge case that was highly unlikely to happen. – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:07, 1 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the bot waits for 15 minutes before posting a message, and doesn't check to see if the talk page has been moved in the meantime. — Qwerfjkltalk 11:59, 2 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]

  • Following a motion, remedy 9.1 of the Conduct in deletion-related editing case has been amended to limit TenPoundHammer to one XfD nomination or PROD per 24-hour period.
  • Following a motion, the Iskandar323 further POV pushing motion has been rescinded.
  • The Arbitration Committee has passed a housekeeping motion rescinding a number of outdated remedies and enforcement provisions across multiple legacy cases. In most instances, existing sanctions remain in force and continue to be appealable through the usual processes, while some case-specific remedies were amended or clarified.

How can I stop these Talk page notifications? Thanks

Johnjbarton (talk) 00:33, 5 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]

@Johnjbarton, there are instructions on the bot's userpage. Qwerfjkltalk 18:05, 5 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Where is the "the bot's userpage"? Johnjbarton (talk) 18:12, 5 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@Johnjbarton, User:Qwerfjkl (bot). Qwerfjkltalk 18:14, 5 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks but I found nothing on that page about stopping notifications. Johnjbarton (talk) 18:16, 5 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@Johnjbarton, If the bot gave a notification of a reference error (task 17), add {{bots|optout=cs1-errors}} at the top of the talk page to opt out. Qwerfjkltalk 18:22, 5 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. These notifications should be placed on the Talk page of the article with the error or better they should be surfaced at edit commit time. Johnjbarton (talk) 18:26, 5 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Johnjbarton, the bot explicitly waits 15 minutes to allow time to fix the error. As for using the talk page for notifications, all notifications for a user are placed on the user's talk page. Putting it on the article's talk page would clog it up (article talk pages are less likely to have archiving in place). — Qwerfjkltalk 10:46, 6 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Your assertion here do not match my experience. I receive Alerts and Notices all the time without clogging up my Talk page. My Talk page does not have archiving and this is true of almost every Talk page I have visited. On the other hand, almost all of the pages I work on have archiving.
Other bots work by setting categories on the article page and I have seen this work well. In fact the bot could post a category change edit to the page with a summary "Mark page with CS1 error introduced by <User>" and then the User would see it in their watchlist, as well as everyone else and anyone motivated to fix these errors by watching the category. As it is currently I will never know about CS1 errors I introduced because I've blocked the bot. Johnjbarton (talk) 15:06, 6 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Johnjbarton:
I receive Alerts and Notices all the time without clogging up my Talk page. how?
Other bots work by setting categories on the article page and I have seen this work well. which ones? — Qwerfjkltalk 15:08, 6 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't know how the systems work. The Alerts include "mentions" like @Qwerfjkl and "Qwerfjkl left you a message on your Talk page" items. Notices include Thanks, notification of pages reviewed, and Wikidata items.
  • I see routine semi-automatic edit like this one all the time. The edits are driven by Category:CS1 errors: dates
Johnjbarton (talk) 15:32, 6 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Here's another idea: create User talk:Qwerfjkl/CS1-errors and post your messages on that page using @Qwerfjkl mentions. End the post with "Please reply 'Done' when you have had a chance to fix the problem". The user gets a notification pointing to the post. The page and its archive become a database for the bot actions. Johnjbarton (talk) 16:10, 6 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
┌───────────────────────────┘
Johnjbarton, there is no direct way to trigger such notifications. All I can do is talk page messages and pings. I could, as you suggest, post to a dedicated page, but that's not how notifications are typically done on Wikipedia. There is no need for a database for the bot actions, they are quite easily queryable by the edit summary.
I don't see any indication the edit you gave as an example is semi-automated, but it's not a notification and not done by a bot. — Qwerfjkltalk 18:54, 6 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Where do we learn how notifications are typically done? Among the pages where posts might be made we have:
  • The article Talk page. Visible to all editors interested in the article; one gets pinged.
  • The users Talk page. Only easily visible to one editor; that editor also gets pinged.
  • Error Talk page. Visible to anyone interested in such errors; one gets pinged.
So the notification is the same across the options. But which page gets clogged up differs. I think the clog should be on the Error Talk page.
My example was intended to point out that a tracking category is another way of marking article to be fixed. I think the category is automatically created. Let's ask @Ira Leviton: your edits that I see always say "Fixed references. Please see Category:CS1 errors: dates." Are they semi-automated? Johnjbarton (talk) 19:12, 6 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Some of my edits are semi-automated, but not those with the edit summary "Fixed references. Please see Category:CS1 errors: dates." For those, I go to that tracking category page, click on the article name, and correct the date format manually. (The article is automatically placed in that tracking category when it has a date format that is not formatted correctly, as detailed above the list of articles.) I hope this info helps. Ira Leviton (talk) 19:28, 6 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! In all cases here the fixes are manual. The page Category:CS1 errors: dates says Pages with this error are automatically placed in Category:CS1 errors: dates. So that is why I called it semi-automated. Johnjbarton (talk) 19:43, 6 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Johnjbarton, the point is not merely to have one instance of the error fixed, but to point out to users that they've made a mistakes when adding the reference, so that hopefully they won't do it again. See Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/DPL bot 2 for a bot that works similarly. — Qwerfjkltalk 19:42, 6 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
The notification accomplishes that goal. The clogging-of-user-talk page however works against that goal. I will never see these error messages again because I've blocked posting on my talk page. Of course perhaps I'm the only one.
Yes, DPL bot is also an offender in my opinion. At least it tells me in every post how to opt out.
Both of these solution are a waste of editor time: the error message should occur at or before the edit is submitted. That is when the fix is easy. Johnjbarton (talk) 19:49, 6 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for listening, I won't pester you further. Johnjbarton (talk) 19:50, 6 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Johnjbarton, that would be nice, and mw:Edit check/Reference Check exists, but I wouldn't be too hopeful. — Qwerfjkltalk 12:17, 7 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Are there any guidelines/policies for 'Legacy' sections in biographies? Specifically, I'm interested in rewriting this section because of its very promotional writing style. --Newtbytes (talk) 19:36, 10 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Newtbytes, I can see what you mean. The "Current Relevance" section has similar issues. I couldn't find a specific policy on such sections, though of course promotional writing anyway is not permitted on Wikipedia (per Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not#Wikipedia is not a soapbox or means of promotion). You can try asking at Wikipedia:Teahouse or Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Biography and see if any editors more knowledgeable than I can point you to a specific page addressing these kinds of sections.
That said, the promotional tone is largely introduced through two edits: Ruzena Bajcsy (Diff ~1283699123), and Ruzena Bajcsy (Diff ~1324198578). There have been no other substantive edits to the article since, so it might be a better idea to revert the article to a state before all the promotional material was introduced. Then, if you want, you could rewrite the section from scratch; I don't think anything from the section as it is now is really worth saving. — Qwerfjkltalk 20:23, 10 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
