Project invitation
Hey, I see you´re continuing to work on articles about military history. I don't know if you´re already aware but there is WikiProject Military history where you can find resources, structures, tutorials, article requests, a discussion platform and many other history editors. You might be interested e.g. in the taskforces about Early Modern warfare or German military history. It´s free and without further requirements, so you can take a look; and if you´re interested to sign up at some point just do so. Anyway, thanks for the time and for editing about military history and please continue with your work (und viel Spaß dabei). Regards ...GELongstreet (talk) 18:38, 12 February 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for the invitation! Yes, I've seen the project and I'm indeed interested. I'm glad if I can help you regarding the 17th century or especially the Thirty Years' War :) --Palastwache (talk) 08:38, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

Correction to previous election announcement
Just a quick correction to the prior message about the 2022 MILHIST coordinator election! I (Hog Farm) didn't proofread the message well enough and left out a link to the election page itself in this message. The voting will occur here; sorry about the need for a second message and the inadvertent omission from the prior one. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 17:41, 15 September 2022 (UTC)

Welcome
Hi, can you edit more in List of wars involving Germany to improve this article? I'm afraid that the article doesn't have enough information, I also don't have time now to search and edit. Gim709 (talk) 07:59, 6 October 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, of course! I will see what I can do :) It's always a bit confusing if the whole HRE participated in a war or just the Emperor with his own army.--Palastwache (talk) 09:07, 6 October 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks, and don't forget other periods. Gim709 (talk) 08:49, 14 October 2022 (UTC)

German vs Germanic
Not a problem - I don't have a view on whether the edit was an improvement or not, I was mass reverting the contributions of yet another sock from a particularly prolific globally banned LTA. Many of their edits are fine, but many of them also introduce their own POV that they are intent on pushing here - there aren't enough hours in the day to review them all, I just roll them all back. Feel free to reinstate any that you are prepared to stand by yourself. Girth Summit (blether) 13:27, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the information! Palastwache (talk) 13:31, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- It's actually the same person behind the account I see a few sections up on this page, posting as Gim709. You and they must share some interests. Girth Summit (blether) 13:36, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- I remember him from the article List of wars involving Germany. His edits seemed to be mostly good faith, but often with a hectic frequence and in an erratic style. I looked after the article every now and then but it has been entirely rewritten by another user since Gim709 was active there. Palastwache (talk) 13:57, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- They check back in on that article periodically. Looking through the recent history, I see Anewplayer05 and Gaitrumb, both of them were the same person. They are generally mostly concerned with Vietnam war stuff, but obviously have a side interest in German military history. Anyway, not something you need to worry about. Cheers Girth Summit (blether) 11:53, 2 November 2024 (UTC)

I consider these generals from the Thirty Years War can still be included in the list, as they belonged to the army. Kolya Muratov (talk) 08:55, 13 September 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @Kolya Muratov, thanks for bringing this up to the Talk page!
- I'm not sure what you mean by "they belonged to the army". They served in the Imperial Army of the Holy Roman Emperor (Kaiserliche Armee), the personal troops of the Emperor. They did not serve in the Reichsarmee/Army of the Holy Roman Empire. The Army of the Emperor was not a part or subunit of the Army of the Empire. The Emperor's troops were a standing army since 1619, the Army of the Empire however was only deployed temporarily on behalf of the Imperial Diet in times of war (what did not happen during the Thirty Years War).
- Prior to 1619, the Emperor and the Princes would combine their troops to e. g. fight the Ottomans (in the preceding time period, it is difficult to distinguish both armies from each other). But after the Emperor had a standing army, he wouldn't integrate his troops anymore into the Army of the Empire as this gave him better control of his forces. Is this understandable? Palastwache (talk) 10:41, 13 September 2025 (UTC)
- I understand you. Can you please provide any citation which states that the army of the empire does not include the army of the Habsburg emperor? I thought it was always a subunit. Kolya Muratov (talk) 11:14, 13 September 2025 (UTC)
- Does the literature state it otherwise anywhere? It will be difficult to find a citation that something is not something. Also, that is not what needs to be proven. The opposite would have to be proven.
- I will search the German and English literature for statements regarding the nature of both armies because both articles are in need of more citations.
- One useful source seems William Godsey & Petr Mata "The Habsburg Monarchy as a Fiscal-Military State" (2022); p. 220 states regarding the war of 1663/1664 against the Ottomans: "In the end, the Estates assisted the emperor in different ways: some sent their own troops, whereas the Rhenish Alliance provided a contingent; the remaining Estates established an imperial army based on military units drawn from the imperial circles." This is one example of the deployment of an Army of the Holy Roman Empire (which is meant here by "an imperial army") that was a separate entity to the standing army of the Habsburg Emperor. The Army of the HRE was composed of troops recruited by the imperial circles. The Emperor theoretically had to provide troops from his own estates to the Army of the HRE, but in practice the Austrian Circle was completely dominated by him, so he deployed his personal troops and did not integrate them into the Army of the HRE.
- More explicitly, on p. 221 it states about the Army of the HRE defined by the Reichskriegsverfassung of 1681 "Moreover, this Reichsarmee did not represent the whole military power of the Reich, as the armies of the emperor himself and the armed Estates were not included". Palastwache (talk) 11:15, 15 September 2025 (UTC)
- It needs to be studied, yes. And requires more reflection.
- If speaking formally, the emperor recruits his army within the Armed Forces of the HRE. I have not been immersed in this particular topic, so only speculation. Kolya Muratov (talk) 12:01, 15 September 2025 (UTC)
- It changed throughout the centuries. Until the Thirty Years War, the Imperial Estates either provided troops or money to the Emperor in case an imperial war (Reichskrieg) was declared. After 1648, the Emperor had his own standing army, recruited within his own territory, financed by the Austrian and Bohemian estates. He was allowed to recruit troops elsewhere in the HRE but the other territories had their own armies. The armies of these "armed Estates" like Prussia or Hesse-Kassel were not under the Emperor's control. Neither did they provide troops to the Army of the Holy Roman Empire. The latter was assembled from the troops of smaller territories and fragmented imperial circles. When the Empire fought together, a combination of the Emperor's army, troops from the armed Estates and the Army of the Holy Roman Empire fought together. A shared command was desirable, but difficult to implement in practice. Palastwache (talk) 21:22, 15 September 2025 (UTC)
- This is enough to confirm the factual non-involvement of the armies with each other. Kolya Muratov (talk) 10:32, 16 September 2025 (UTC)
