I will be gone for the next few days. Not included as part of the review time. Czarking0 (talk) 04:12, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'll take this one. Nom is first author. Earwig notes possible violations. I believe these to be common phrases that cannot be copyrighted. Going back to 2019 I see no significant edit warring or other stability issues. Czarking0 (talk) 04:06, 14 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Comments

Early life is not a good section it spans 1937 to 1999.Czarking0 (talk) 04:06, 14 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Divided some of the later information into a personal life section in this edit.

I find it odd that there are no notable speeches or writing listed. There is an overall lack of information like Eagleton Institute of Politics named him as one of 50 outstanding state legislators in 1974 begs the question for what? I will do a secondary source review to determine if this is worth failing over.Czarking0 (talk) 04:20, 14 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It should be noted that Valdez was a state legislator for only three years at the point and eight in total, including two as speaker. Being an "outstanding" state legislator in the US is a very low bar to pass and a lot of the time they give no major speeches.

Spot Checks

  • He returned to Colorado in 1960, and became president of the Steelworkers Local 5099. I think this sentence give the impression that these happened in the same year which the source does not. I think the claim is verified but it should be reworded for better chronological clarity. Czarking0 (talk) 04:11, 14 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I added "later" to the sentence in this edit.
  • In 1981, Lamm appointed Valdez to the commission overseeing redistricting, using his power to select 3 of its 11 members  Done
  • Governor Richard Lamm considered appointing Valdez as Colorado State Treasurer in 1977, but Valdez declined the offer. I didn't feel like I could verify this with the first source and hit my free article limit for the second source. Can you add a quote for supporting that here?Czarking0 (talk) 04:42, 14 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Per this source "Valez told The Associated Press that he took himself out of consideration"

Additional sources

clipped Not really anything major to add from this

clipped I will integrate this into the article
  1. Colorado Springs Gazette Newspaper Archives April 1, 1975 Page 38 Tax bill
clipped This story is about a tax bill and not Valdez. He just offers standard political commentary and nothing Wikipedia worthy.
  1. Less notable but interchamber squabble Colorado Springs Gazette Newspaper Archives November 28, 1975 Page 52
I read the article, but it was just a discussion to change how many days they met.
  1. Somewhat limited but possible idea here Colorado Springs Gazette Newspaper Archives May 11, 1976 Page 111
clipped The article's mention of Valdez is just him telling the caucus that he would meet with someone to discuss school finance and property tax issues.
  1. Significant action here Colorado Springs Gazette Newspaper Archives January 10, 1975 Page 68. The scheduling issues is mentioned in multiple other sources I checked. There is probably an interesting historical point about how Colorado's 6-month legislative session came about but it may not belong in this article? Maybe as a background sentence if that was established before his time in office?
clipped I don't really see anything to add from this article
  1. Colorado Springs Gazette Newspaper Archives March 30, 1976 Page 78, enforcing education budget for bilingual programs
clipped Will integrate into article
  1. Notable speech Colorado Springs Gazette Newspaper Archives February 13, 1975 Page 119
clipped This is just standard political talk to a caucus.

I think this is enough to start to show that additional coverage and sources are needed. Added some more here, I see 90 more articles on newspaper archive Czarking0 (talk) 02:07, 15 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Czarking0: I am having some problems finding these articles on Newspapers.com. Is this the correct Colorado Springs Gazette that you are talking about?
Yes, all of the articles are on newspaper archive free via WP:TWLCzarking0 (talk) 04:11, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Could you give me a link to these stories? I am having problems finding them. Jon698 (talk) 04:52, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Just search Ruben Valdez on newspaper archive. I can't give you a link because the links are personalized. Czarking0 (talk) 05:06, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Czarking0: I have added some information from those sources above in this edit. Jon698 (talk) 15:11, 21 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think was critical is too vague. This is a powerful politician who participated in threatening to withhold funding. Also I want to reiterate that the sources I added here were just my GAR demonstration of a lack of coverage. The newspaper archive shows around ninety more similar sources that I do not believe are already covered in the article. I expect you to go through all of them to make complete coverage in the article. Czarking0 (talk) 15:13, 21 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I would like to withdraw this nomination. Jon698 (talk) 09:34, 26 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Images

Article could use additional images but I could not find any of him that are free. There may be notable / suitable locations associated with his work that should be included. On a related note the existing image is good and I agree that it meets Fair use criteria. Czarking0 (talk) 04:46, 14 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
