Spelling of nickname
Why is the teams nickname the "Sabres" & not the "Sabers"? The latter would seem to be closer to US spelling.
- Interesting question, maybe there is some interesting trivia as to why it was settled on as Sabres instead of sabers, if you can find something notable to add to the article I doubt anybody would find exception and revert it. Be BOLD in your editing!EliteArcher88 (talk) 18:14, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
- The Sabres got their name in 1969 from Toronto filmmaker Harry Cole, who entered the suggestion in a name-the-team contest hosted by Seymour Knox III and Northrup Knox, the founding owners of the franchise. Because of this and in honor of our close neighbors to the north, Knox III chose to utilize the Canadian English spelling of the word. 2603:7080:C103:CC71:8805:1C64:1E66:E74B (talk) 11:12, 2 November 2023 (UTC)

The Sabres have only been to the Stanley Cup finals twice
The wiki page states the Sabres have been to the Stanley Cup finals three times. This is false, they have only been twice. During the 1979-1980 season, the Stanley Cup finals was between the New York Islanders and the Philadelphia Flyers. 47.14.240.135 (talk) 01:27, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
- Where does it say that they were finalists three times? Ravenswing 04:07, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
- I think the confusion comes from the fact that the Sabres have 3 Conference Championships, but that's because the Prince of Wales Trophy was awarded to the regular season conference champs between 1974 and 1981, so despite the fact that they didn't make the finals in 1979-1980, they were still considered Conference Champions. Qwaiiplayer (talk) 15:06, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
- Oh, I'm pretty sure that's what it was. It's just one of the several issues bedeviling hockey articles (Montreal's number of Cups/league championships, Tigers/Americans/Sharks/Barons/Seals, Black Hawks/Blackhawks, award eligibility) from people unaware that the rules and practices governing the NHL in 2024 weren't necessarily in force for the hundred-plus years prior. History
- I borrowed the book 100 Years of Hockey from the InternetArchive but page 109 does not mention the Sabres or Canucks. It is mentioned on page 106. Please adjust accordingly. Since the book was seemingly scanned directly into the InternetArchive, I do not believe this is an issue of online vs. IRL page discrepancy.
Done - Robert O. Swados and the team's inaugural board of directors are not supported by the source
Done - Please wikilink (WL) Mugwumps
Done - The sentence that starts with
Their first attempt ....
is a run on. Consider breaking it into two sentences with a period afterselect Pittsburgh over Buffalo...
Done - I think the wording here is misleading
At the time of their creation, the Sabres exercised their option to create their own AHL farm team, the Cincinnati Swords
. I do not see it mentioned in the source that theyexercised their option
.
Done sharing Memorial Auditorium with the Sabres
the source given does not say this
Donethey took the ice to Aram Khachaturian's Armenian war dance
This wording is confusing. I would recommend rewording it to they used Aram Khachaturian's Armenian war dance as their entrance song.
Done- (optional) Can you get a better reference for the "anthem" sentence than a one-off line?
Done It is often played between periods and after goals.
Unsourced
Done- Please add page 33 to reference #19
Done - Reference #21 doesn't really show they didn't qualify for the playoffs. It just says
Finished 5th in NHL East Division
. If someone doesn't understand how the NHL playoffs work, this would not be clear to them.
Done In the team's second season, 1971–72, rookie Rick Martin, drafted fifth overall by Buffalo in 1971,[22] and Rene Robert, acquired in a late-season trade from the Pittsburgh Penguins,[23] joined Perreault and would become one of the league's top forward lines in the 1970s.
There's a lot of commas here. Can this be reworded?
Done
- Maybe: During the team's second season in 1971–72, newly drafted rookie Rick Martin teamed up with Perreault and newly acquired Rene Robert to form one of the league's top forward lines of the 1970s.
- A couple notes about this sentence:
After a subpar year in 1974 that saw them miss the playoffs (as well as aging defenseman Tim Horton's death in a DUI-induced car accident[26]), the Sabres tied for the best record in the NHL in the 1974–75 regular season
Done
- Is
aging
really neccessary here? Tim Horton's didn't die of natural causes.
Done - I would specify that 1973-74 was subpar because I was confused orignally when I read this
Done - The reference doesn't say that the year was
subpar
.
Done
- Is
- Is
who had been recently nicknamed the "Broad Street Bullies"
important?
Done - Referene #27 doesn't say
tied for the best record in the NHL
Done - Can 1975_Stanley_Cup_Finals#Fog_and_the_bat be WL anywhere? I am asking because the article states the Fog Game was "legendary" but I was suprised that there was no WL attached
Done - Reference #29 does not mention the French Connection.
Done - This bracket
(Perreault, Martin and Robert)
is not needed because it was stated earlier
Done The Sabres had success through the late 1970s behind Gare and the French Connection (Perreault, Martin and Robert), but they were unable to return to the Finals despite a Wales Conference championship in 1980 and being the first team to beat the Soviet Olympic Team when they toured the United States.
This seems like a lot to simply skim over.
Doneby which time Martin's career was essentially finished as the result of a devastating knee injury in 1980.
Is this necessary to mention?
Done- I know
sweater
is often used colloquially for "jersey" but if I was not a fan, I would be confused.
Done
Adams/Northeast Division rivalries (1981–1996)
- Ref #40 doesn't say
third-best in the NHL
Done - Is
(the last three games in overtime)
necessary? If so, I would make it a new sentence rather than putting it in brackets.
Done - (optional) I don't think hockey typically uses the phrase
"walk-on"
. This is more of a baseball term.
Done
Finals trip and ownership turnover (1996–2005)
wrote a column that night for the next day's newspaper that detailed the day's events which irked Hasek
. The source actually says that Kelley questioned the severity of the injury. Until I clicked on the link, this sentence did not make sense to me. Please reword.
DoneShields starred as the Sabres rallied to win the series against Ottawa.
Reference doesn't say that. The reference saysBackup Steve Shields has been starting in his place
. Did you mean started instead of starred?
Done
New owners and return to the Finals
In the 1998–99 season, Miroslav Satan scored 40 goals.
This was a very random placement and gives little to no context. Was Satan drafted by the Sabres? Did they trade for him? Why is 40 goals important?
Done
- (optional) I would recommend moving this sentence to the one after
The Sabres would add centers Stu Barnes from the Pittsburgh Penguins and Joe Juneau from the Capitals
.
- (optional) I would recommend moving this sentence to the one after
goal mouth
?
Done- How did the Sabres do in 1999-2000?
Done - This is the first time the nickname
"The Dominator"
is mentioned. I would recommend mentioning it earlier or simply removing it.
Done
Ownership turmoil and lockout
The next season was then curbed by the 2004–05 NHL lockout
. Unsourced
Done- Is there any more information about what happened during the lockout? Were renovations made to the arena? Did personal change?
Done
Post-Briere–Drury era
- Ref #127 doesn't say
second-round pick
Done Additionally, center Rob Niedermayer was added as a Stanley Cup-winning, veteran presence
reference doesn't say this is why he was added
Done
Playoff drought
- Is
65 Adler fans traveled from Germany to Buffalo
important to mention? I think it's a bit off-topic.
Done - Is
long-time
necessary when you elaborate later on in the sentence?
Done In the days leading up to it
What is "it"? The permanent status of Rolston?
Done- I would make
(he later signed a three-year contract extension)
a new sentence.
Done - Maybe a brief explanation about who Tim Murray is and why he was chosen as GM?
Done
- Eg. "Former general manager for the Rochester Americans" or "long-time hockey executive Tim Murray"
Done - Please fix the WL to Tim Murray (ice hockey executive)
Done
- Eg. "Former general manager for the Rochester Americans" or "long-time hockey executive Tim Murray"
- The sentence starting with
On March 26, 2015...
is way too much exposition for a single fan incident. You can certainly bring up the "embrace the tank" philosophy, but I think this is giving undue weight. Were fans not like this in previous seasons?
Done On August 17, 2023, Rick Jeanneret passed away
. Please change the wording per MOS:EUPHEMISM
DoneIn a statement to the press, Sabres chief operating officer Pete Guelli insisted that the team did not intend to relocate
. Citation needed.
