Türkmenbaşy
On 22 October 1993, the Assembly of Turkmenistan officially changed the name of Saparmyrat Nyýazow, the first President of Turkmenistan from 1991 to 2006, to Saparmyrat Türkmenbaşy. The name "Türkmenbaşy" roughly translates as "head/leader of the Turkmen," making him, according to the decree, the leader of all Turkmen in the world.
The name "Türkmenbaşy" was then used as an element of the cult of personality built around Saparmyrat Nyýazow and was used as a recurring toponym for populated places, streets, landmarks, administrative divisions, etc.
