Exécuté pour l'église de la commanderie des Antonins d'Issenheim, chanoines hospitaliers qui accueillaient malades et pèlerins venus vénérer Saint Antoine, ce retable est le chef-d'oeuvre du musée d'UnterLinden. Présenté dans son lieu d'origine, il avait une fonction thaumaturgique : les malades priaient devant le polyptyque dans l'attente d'un miracle. La partie peinte du retable fut exécutée entre 1510 et 1516. Saint Sébastien et Saint Antoine, protecteur de l'ordre encadrent la crucifixion. Saint Jean-Baptiste, qui symbolise l'Ancien Testament, annonce le Nouveau Testament en montrant le Christ du doigt. La prédelle illustre la mise au tombeau. Saint Sébastien : Patron des archers, premiers des saints implorés contre la peste, il est représenté indifférent à la douleur. La tradition y reconnaît les traits de Mathias Grünewald, qui se serait représenté. |
