2–13 In celebration of Matt Lauer's 20th anniversary as an anchor, former Today anchors Katie Couric and Meredith Vieira will return to Rockefeller Center's Studio 1A to fill in for Savannah Guthrie, who left the program for maternity leave in December 2016. Couric will co-host on the week of January 2nd (which will mark her first time since she left the program in May 2006), followed by Vieira on the week of January 9th, as a lead in to the program's 65th anniversary.[1]
6 After nearly 23 years, Tegna Media's Seattle-based Northwest Cable News announced that the channel will shut down on this date. The closure arrives after the retirements or contract buyouts of several high-profile on- and off-screen talent the previous April, and also comes at a time when the channel's viewership has decreased in the face of increased news consumption on digital and other non-TV platforms. Approximately 20 employees will be affected, with Tegna seeking to offer them positions at other Tegna stations.[2]
8 The 74th Golden Globes will air on NBC, with Jimmy Fallon as host.
16 PBS will expand the PBS Kids programming franchise by launching a 24/7 PBS Kids Channel on digital subchannels of some of its member stations, and will also be streamed on the PBS Kids app, and on streaming devices. [3]
18 The 43rd People's Choice Awards will air on CBS.

Star Trek returns to television on CBS All Access with a new Star Trek series, subtitled Discovery. This ends the absence of Star Trek on broadcast television since Enterprise was cancelled in 2005.[5]
