- Argentina defeats Mexico 2-1 in the extra time and advances to the quarter finals.
- Germany defeats Sweden 2-0 and advances to the quarter finals.
- Switzerland defeats Korea Republic 2-0, the teams finishing first and third, respectively, in Group G. Switzerland are the only team in the 2006 World Cup that have not yet conceded a goal.
- France advances into the second round with a 2-0 win over Togo, the teams finishing second and fourth, respectively, in Group G.
- Spain fields its reserves and earns a 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia, the teams finishing first and fourth, respectively, in Group H.
