- Argentina defeats Serbia and Montenegro 6-0, the widest victory margin in the World Cup Finals to date.
- Sweden wins 1-0 against Paraguay, scoring in the 88th minute, ensuring that Paraguay cannot qualify for the second round.
- England scores two goals in the last 10 minutes after many lost chances to beat Trinidad and Tobago 2-0, becoming the third team to secure a place in the second round.
- Ecuador beats Costa Rica 3-0, to take the lead in Group A and secure a place in the second round. The win also ensures that Costa Rica and Poland will not find a place in the last 16.
- Germany beats Poland 1-0, thanks to the match's only goal by Oliver Neuville in stoppage time, becoming the first team to make certain of qualifying for the second round.
- Saudi Arabia draw 2-2 with Tunisia. Tunisia's Radhi Jaidi scores in stoppage time to level the match.
- Spain defeats Ukraine 4-0, with goals scored by Xabi Alonso, David Villa (2) and Fernando Torres. This is Spain's first win in their World Cup Finals opener since 1950. They have not been beaten in 22 matches.
