- Ecuador beats Costa Rica 3-0, to take the lead in Group A and secure a place in the second round.
- Germany beats Poland 1-0, thanks to the match's only goal by Oliver Neuville in stoppage time, becoming the first team to make certain of qualifying for the second round.
- Saudi Arabia ties Tunisia 2-2. Tunisia's Radhi Jaidi scores in stoppage time to even the match.
- Spain defeats Ukraine 4-0, with goals scored by Xabi Alonso, David Villa (2) and Fernando Torres. This is Spain's first win in their World Cup opener since 1950. They have not been beaten in 22 matches.
- Brazil defeats Croatia 1-0. Kaká scores the match's only goal. With this victory, the defending champions set a record for the longest winning streak of a team in World Cups with eight consecutive victories (2002's clean sweep and this one).
- Switzerland hold France to a 0-0 draw. This makes it no goals in France's last four World Cup Finals matches.
